“What a wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

We arrived at the Golden Lion not entirely sure of what to expect. We had booked through the website and everything had looked really beautiful, but I have had previous bad experiences with booking online so it was lovely to arrive and not be disappointed one bit. Check in was immediate in the bar with one of the friendly bar staff who took us up to our room and showed us where everything was and what time breakfast was etc. They had made a great effort in providing an extra bed for our 18 month old son which was also a nice surprise. The rooms are beautifully decorated with great attention to detail and very clean - we really felt well looked after from the word go.

Following check in and settling into our room we made our way down to the cosy traditional bar which had a really great selection of beers including some local ones to try too. We had booked a meal in the restaurant when booking our room and where shown to our table by a very friendly waitress. The food was delicious! I had smoked sprats from the specials board followed by local lamb shank (Yum!) my husband had a meat antipasti which was served on a wooden board and was full of all sorts of delicious meats, olives and cheeses. The bread which came with our starters was a really nice locally baked seeded bread which made a refreshing change from the usual boring brown that you find in most places. He then followed the antipasti by a ribeye steak from the local butcher which was definitely one of the high points of his stay - it was perfectly cooked and came with a red onion jam and a local blue cheese crumbled on the top!! The children's meals that were available for our son were of good quality and with very generous portions (we stole half his chips!) and he was very happy. Even after all of that I still managed to squeeze in a rich sticky toffee and date pudding... very very satisfied customers. The staff in the bar and the restaurant could not do enough for us and where very happy to chat about places to go and things to see in the local area even though they where super busy. This is obviously a very popular place with locals and tourists alike. Which is always a good sign!

We all slept well and made our way down to breakfast which again did not disappoint on any level. Fresh fruit, a great selections of cereals, Organic yogurts (nice touch), a really wide selection of local and organic jams, marmalade and spreads and lots of different herbal teas, fresh coffee and breakfast tea made a real treat for breakfast. We then had delicious 'Welsh' full breakfasts which was really fresh and tasty! Definitely set us up for a hard days work of roaming the Pembrokeshire coastline and it's beautiful beaches and views - although in January bring your thermals and waterproofs!!

We will definitely be recommending the Golden Lion to friends and family and look forward to coming back again very soon!

Having stayed at the Golden Lion a few times when myself and my husband decided to get married in Pentre Ifan in Newport, Pembrokeshire we knew where our base would be - at the Golden Lion. We took over all of the rooms for the whole weekend. We cannot say enough about the treatment we got, excellent service, excellent food and drink. We certainly can't thank Dai enough for all his help in the months leading up to the wedding and the weekend of the wedding. Definitely recommend staying here and many of our friends have stayed here on our recommendation. Keep up the good work!!

This is a lovely dog-friendly pub in the heart of Newport, Pembrokeshire. excellent 'real ales' are available. There was a roaring log fire when we called. A great, friendly place to enjoy a pint and a chat with friends. We did not try the food, but the menu looked really good. Calling in here is highly recommended after a decent walk on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path!

Six of us stayed in Newport over Christmas 2012. The Golden Lion was our favourite pub. The service, bar snacks and restaurant provided excellent quality and value. The staff were always helpful and there were three good real ales available at the bar. The wine list was well priced.

We spent our 4th new year at the golden lion. It's friendly, comfortable, with great staff and a lovely atmosphere. We have booked already for next year and will no doubt visit in between. Newport is a little haven. Fab beach, walks and hospitality at the golden lion makes it perfect.

My wife and I recently enjoyed a wonderful w/e in a country inn near the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and on the edge of the Presceli Mountains. The Golden Lion has friendly staff, excellent food, and comfortable and clean rooms. We took advantage of a winter offer of a free evening meal (from a restricted menu) with two nights b&b. We look forward to returning in the near future.

My boyfriend and I just returned from a two night break at the Golden Lion (care of Groupon £99 for two people for 2 nights B&B and one dinner) and had a lovely time overall. Our room (2) was spacious, spotlessly clean and finished to a high standard. We ate in the restaurant on the first night (a Sunday) where there was a large and fairly boisterous Christmas party nearing the end of their meal. The waitress offered for us to have our meal in the bar area if we preferred but we decided to stay where we were. The Groupon menu option was limited but with the option of "upgrading" which we chose to do. We had shredded duck breast spring rolls to start and mains of beer battered haddock and chips and lemon and chilli chicken. The food was well cooked, good portion sizes and served promptly despite there being the other large party to serve. The next night we ate in the bar (gourmet burgers) which we preferred due to the open fire, lovely atmosphere and a group of musicians playing Irish music. The breakfast was ecellent quality and plentiful.
Two small niggles were the noise from the kitchen's large extractor chimney which was just outside our room and the heat in the room. The staff were efficient, friendly and welcoming throughout our stay. I would certainly recommend the Golden Lion and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2 which was contemporary and spacious. The downside was the kitchen extractor loca...
