We stayed at Club Med for part of or Honeymoon. Dec 27th - Dec 5th.
Overall we really liked Club Med Bora Bora. Here are our thoughts. We are 27 and 33 years old. Tahiti is a very expensive place, especially if you come from America, our exchange rate right now with the franc is the pits. So, be ready for that no matter where you stay. Bora Bora only has one car rental place which cost 120.00 for 8 hour rental. We didn’t do many of the excursions just because they where so pricey. We did book the Club Med lagoon tour and it cost 100.00 pp. You’re able to get in the water and stay behind a rope while they fed the sharks up close—really close. Then after the shark feeding, they travel about 400 yards and you get to get back into the water and feed sting rays. It was pretty cool and we thought it was worth the money. Club med has many free activities, including the snorkeling trip, which was great. They give you big chunks of bread to feed the fish with. The fish swam around you and eat the bread out of your hand if you hold onto it. The coral and sea creatures are good in Tahiti. One free thing that was our favorite at Club Med was the sailing. They have nice Hobie Cat sail boats. We have never sailed before, and had to take two days of 1½ hr lessons in order to take the boat out solo. Which included “here’s the boat, this is how you stop, this is your sail and how it works, any questions? Ok good, follow me.” Quite a few people flipped due to lack of instruction and language barrier, I think, and they had to have help flipping them back over. We thought sailing was a blast and believe it’s a must do at Club Med. Tried the wind surfing and kayaked. I think you should be able to find some activities at Club Med that you will like.
We stayed at the Pearl Resort on Moorea before Club Med. We thought the buffet food at Club Med was better then the Pearl even though the Pearl was a 4 star resort. If you can’t find something you like your just to picky and that your deal. They have a fruit station, salad station, bread station, desert station, soup, and lots of choices for your main dish. If you don’t like what you picked just go back up and try something else. All and all good food we thought. Just don’t try the cheese sandwiches at the bar that you can get to snack on if you are starving.
The staff put on shows every night which are really good and fun to check out. Some are of course better then others but its something to do after dinner. We spent new years there and I have to say it was a blast. They put on a great New Year’s party. The alcohol at Club med was fine with us, however, sometimes they would make the drinks to strong for us. Then, if they were too weak we would just ask for a little more.
Here are some of the bad things about Club Med. The beds are really hard at Club Med. When I go to a hotel/resort the beds either make or break it. They really are dropping the ball in that category. We ended up asking for six blankets and stacked them. That made the bed much better and sleepable. The springs do “boing” when you move around. Not great for a romantic honeymoon. The beds do need some updating.
They don’t have a pool at Club Med. I like to chill at a pool sometimes instead of the beach chair/hammock. They could use a few more beach chairs with shade umbrellas.
On the surface Club Med could use some updating. “Design on a Dime” should go to Club Med Bora Bora due to the plainness and lack of decor. That’s about all the negatives we have about Club Med.
I would say whichever resort you pick in Bora Bora/Tahiti, try to see yourself sitting there all day, with a few hours set aside for excursions. I would recommend going with a meal plan where it’s included in the price of your stay. We talked to a few people who didn’t included food with their accommodations and ended up feeling ripped off on food. Since we paid for it ahead of time we didn’t stress on food prices and ate whatever we wanted.
We are not picky people and we knew what we where getting since we read all the reviews. Expect a motel 6 quality to your rooms but with good food. We spent the first 5 days of our 16 day vacation at The Pearl Resort overwater bungalow on Moorea. We did the more pricey accommodations for our first five days and then downgraded with Club Med and saved some cash. All in all, Club Med was a good for us.
