“Club Med? How about Club "NO!"”

Club Med Bora Bora

I hope this helps someone from making the mistake of a lifetime. I just returned from Club Med in Bora Bora with a rather larger group. One would think that as a group at least one of us would have found the resort worth while, but we all give Zero's across the board. The staff was extremely rude, inauspicious, uninviting, and down right inhospitable. The “bungalows” are basically cabins one might find at a children’s sleep away camp. Inside our “upgraded” cabin we had no hot water, and bed made for a torture chamber. Actually they were two small beds pushed together. Just imagine sleeping on the sidewalk with springs poking you in the back and you will get the picture. The food was ok at times, but buffet style only. The hours are very strictly adhered to. In fact there were several cases of staff members taking food from guests, clapping to guests to get them to hurry out, physically pulling the plug out of the coffee machine to stop a guest from getting one for the road and the list goes on. I recall one member of our group, who is pregnant, asking for a sandwich because she couldn’t wait until 7:30 pm when dinner started. They told her “No” to her face over an over. They advertise a snack menu at the bar, but it not always available, and even when available you get knock off Pringles, Doritos, and Lays potato chips. The bar was frequently “out of” many of the beers available, and couldn’t make a cocktail to save their life. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of a Martini there? Please consider this a warning to stay away from Club Med, or as we commonly referred to it as Club No!

Oh yea, the island is beautiful, so go to Bora Bora, just find a better resort.

“Awesome stay”

Club Med Bora Bora

Well, I was a bit aprehensive to go to the club med because of some reviews I read online and the fact that I am very picky. Well this stay was AWESOME!
I am not giving a 5 star because of the simplicity of the furnishing in the rooms but they are still nice, spacious and the bed was comfortable (some review complianed about that) and had a great view on the beach eventhough it was not a beac bungalow (which inside is actually the exact same as the other apt)
The landscaping was nice, the view very pretty, the staff amazingly nice (we speak French so that helped), the food was good and plentiful, the open bar is an awesome feature, you even get snacks there in between meals.
They have great free activities: snorkeling trips (you get to swim by rays), daiy trips to a near by Motu (small island) where the blue of the water will make you dizy, you can go saiing on your own after a sma lesson, windsurfing, tennis, basket bal, free cardio classes (aquagym, combat class, yoga, stretching)...franky it is quite a deal.
We visited the Talasso Spa which is GORGEOUS but was totally dead when we went there. There was not many people and you ave to pay for every activity. Someone was saying that they paid $12 for a breakfast box of cereals...Their rooms are totlly gorgeous and luxurious with a killer view of the aqua horizon. I think it would be fun for one night or two but boring after that...CLub med is definatey a great pick.

Spent a wonderful week at Club Med on Bora Bora enjoying the many activities. We love that everything is included at Club Med, and we took full advantage of it! Everyday we sailed the Hobie Cats and went on the snorkeling trips.
The meals were above average, with breakfast and lunch my favorite meals. I miss the chocolate croissants served every breakfast, as well as the fruit juices and delicious selection of breads. As a somewhat picky eater, I appreciated the wide selection of fish, beef, chicken, vegetables, fruits, cheeses and desserts. There were always several items I wanted to eat.
But what really made the stay spectacular was the Club Med staff. There were several staff members who stand out in my mind. Chin and Sebastian were always glad to help us with sailing, windsurfing, and kayaks. Our last day was a joy as Sebastian taught us to use the trapeze on the Hobie Cats. Fred was always friendly and welcoming. We loved having Damien take us snorkeling, show us the Moray eel and take pictures.
Our stay was wonderful. We were planning our return before we left.

We stayed at Club Med for part of or Honeymoon. Dec 27th - Dec 5th.
Overall we really liked Club Med Bora Bora. Here are our thoughts. We are 27 and 33 years old. Tahiti is a very expensive place, especially if you come from America, our exchange rate right now with the franc is the pits. So, be ready for that no matter where you stay. Bora Bora only has one car rental place which cost 120.00 for 8 hour rental. We didn’t do many of the excursions just because they where so pricey. We did book the Club Med lagoon tour and it cost 100.00 pp. You’re able to get in the water and stay behind a rope while they fed the sharks up close—really close. Then after the shark feeding, they travel about 400 yards and you get to get back into the water and feed sting rays. It was pretty cool and we thought it was worth the money. Club med has many free activities, including the snorkeling trip, which was great. They give you big chunks of bread to feed the fish with. The fish swam around you and eat the bread out of your hand if you hold onto it. The coral and sea creatures are good in Tahiti. One free thing that was our favorite at Club Med was the sailing. They have nice Hobie Cat sail boats. We have never sailed before, and had to take two days of 1½ hr lessons in order to take the boat out solo. Which included “here’s the boat, this is how you stop, this is your sail and how it works, any questions? Ok good, follow me.” Quite a few people flipped due to lack of instruction and language barrier, I think, and they had to have help flipping them back over. We thought sailing was a blast and believe it’s a must do at Club Med. Tried the wind surfing and kayaked. I think you should be able to find some activities at Club Med that you will like.
We stayed at the Pearl Resort on Moorea before Club Med. We thought the buffet food at Club Med was better then the Pearl even though the Pearl was a 4 star resort. If you can’t find something you like your just to picky and that your deal. They have a fruit station, salad station, bread station, desert station, soup, and lots of choices for your main dish. If you don’t like what you picked just go back up and try something else. All and all good food we thought. Just don’t try the cheese sandwiches at the bar that you can get to snack on if you are starving.
The staff put on shows every night which are really good and fun to check out. Some are of course better then others but its something to do after dinner. We spent new years there and I have to say it was a blast. They put on a great New Year’s party. The alcohol at Club med was fine with us, however, sometimes they would make the drinks to strong for us. Then, if they were too weak we would just ask for a little more.

Here are some of the bad things about Club Med. The beds are really hard at Club Med. When I go to a hotel/resort the beds either make or break it. They really are dropping the ball in that category. We ended up asking for six blankets and stacked them. That made the bed much better and sleepable. The springs do “boing” when you move around. Not great for a romantic honeymoon. The beds do need some updating.
They don’t have a pool at Club Med. I like to chill at a pool sometimes instead of the beach chair/hammock. They could use a few more beach chairs with shade umbrellas.
On the surface Club Med could use some updating. “Design on a Dime” should go to Club Med Bora Bora due to the plainness and lack of decor. That’s about all the negatives we have about Club Med.

I would say whichever resort you pick in Bora Bora/Tahiti, try to see yourself sitting there all day, with a few hours set aside for excursions. I would recommend going with a meal plan where it’s included in the price of your stay. We talked to a few people who didn’t included food with their accommodations and ended up feeling ripped off on food. Since we paid for it ahead of time we didn’t stress on food prices and ate whatever we wanted.
We are not picky people and we knew what we where getting since we read all the reviews. Expect a motel 6 quality to your rooms but with good food. We spent the first 5 days of our 16 day vacation at The Pearl Resort overwater bungalow on Moorea. We did the more pricey accommodations for our first five days and then downgraded with Club Med and saved some cash. All in all, Club Med was a good for us.

“Loved Club Med Bora Bora”

Club Med Bora Bora

Dec 19, 2007

I booked my vacation at the Club Med Bora Bora with some concern based on previous reviews on this website. But since I wanted to visit Bora Bora and it looked like the best balance of cost and comfort, I went ahead with Club Med. I have to say I'm not sure I stayed at the same place some other reviewers did. It really far exceeded all expectations.

The resort in general was well maintained with beautiful grounds. I understand that the resort is due for a refurbishment in the next year. This would be nice. While the resort is in good shape, some parts, like the tennis court and the thatched roofs of the main building, show some age. And though the resort is right on the beach, the water here is not as clear as on the motu or some nearby beaches on the island. While not absolutely necessary, a swimming pool somewhere would be a nice addition.

Rooms were good. A little spartan as some others have indicated and some of the furnishings were older, but still more than adequate. The bed was fine and I had no trouble sleeping. In fairness, I travel a lot, and don't have much trouble sleeping anywhere. The bathroom was clean and large. A/C worked well (I had heard mosquitoes could be a problem on Bora Bora, but I didn't get bitten at all.) My room was right on the water with a beautiful view. Club Med doesn't have over water bungalows like other resorts, but the location of these were at least as nice.

Food was all inclusive and far exceeded my expectations. Not 4 star, but not simply hamburgers and fries (although they had these if you wanted them).

Breakfasts were ok, eggs, danish, coffee, fruit, etc.

Lunches were a smaller version of the dinners.

Dinners were buffet style but usually had some theme (seafood, Italian, French, tour of the world), with several specially prepared entrees made on request. There was always some type (or several) well prepared seafood plates and good appetizers like sushi, sashimi or, several nights, oysters. In addition, there were the usual, but very good, dessert, salad, fruit buffets. Wine was ordinary (Vin de Table) but fine. Drinks were all included except for some higher priced cognac and champagne. In general, I thought the food was very good, particularly since I love seafood.

Activities such as snorkeling trips, trips to the motu (an island off shore for lazing on the beach or snorkeling, etc.), sailing, windsurfing, etc. were included. The 2 regular daily snorkeling trips were only a 15 minute boat ride away, but the location, coral and fish were great. I only booked one other activity which was to swim with sharks and rays. They had shows every night, which may be a little amateurish, but still fun and all included. I had plenty to keep me busy.

As corny as it sounds, the most outstanding part of the resort is the people. The club med staff were consistently friendly, helpful and good company. Not at all in a pushy way, they regularly went out of their way to chat with everyone, make sure they were having a good time and showed appreciation for your visit. I know hotel and resort staff are supposed to act this way, but I don't think it was an act for them. They were genuinely good hosts. I literally do not recall a single person who was brusque or unfriendly, and many who were exceptionally warm and kind. Other guests were also a lot of fun.

In Bora Bora, I only stayed at the Club Med, but from what I could see of prices of other hotels, Club Med is a relative value. I paid ~ $440/night all inclusive beachfront. If you check websites like expedia or orbitz, the best room rate you'll find is ~ $200 night on the island for a mediocre room with no view, up to $700 and higher for a major resort room. Throw food and activities on top of that and, in Bora Bora, you could easily be talking at least another $100 - $200/person a day. During one excursion a couple on the same boat from a neighboring resort said a local beer there was ~ $12 and entrees were ~ Euro 40 (they were converting from the local CFP currency). The all inclusive club med price becomes very attractive.

All in all, I really enjoyed Club Med and wholeheartedly recommend it. I planned this as a once in a life time trip and though there are still a lot of other places I want to see, I really hope to come back here.
