June, 2007, my wife and I went to Talkeetna and made an entire day of it. After a flightseeing tour of Mt McKinley with K2 Aviaiton, we spent the day shopping at the different shops and visiting museums. We ate breakfast and lunch at the Roadhouse and walked to a nearby river park for some great photographs of Mt McKinley. We also did a river boat ride with Mahay Riverboat Service, which offers scenic routes, fishing routes and white water adventures, whatever you choose. You find that not much has been written about Talkeetna because in order to visit it, you specifically have to drive on a road that dead ends into the town. But if you want to book a good flightseeing tour of Mt McKinley, float down a scenic river, experience some great fishing, visit unique shops, have one of the best breakfasts in Alaska (the Roadhouse), and talk to some of the most friendly locals I encountered in Alaska, take the dead end road to Talkeetna. This unique little town of Talkeetna is so enchanting and you will find yourself remembering it long after you leave.

We had heard of what an authentic Alaskan town Talkeetna was, and made the drive. It's extremely small, but is one of the only towns to have a view of Mt. McKinley and is supposedly the town that the show Northern Exposure was based on. This is also the base camp for all people who climb McKinley. We stopped for lunch, but beyond that, there really wasn't too much to see.

Our top priority in Talkeetna was flightseeing over Mt. McKinley (Denali). We booked with Talkeetna Air Taxi for the Grand Denali tour with Glacier Landing. We had 2 Toursaver books so my family of 4 saved $440. It was cloudy (as usual) so we were thinking that our trip might be a bummer, but boy were we wrong! We had the time of our lives! My hat's off to those pilots, they really know their stuff! The pilot did a great job of stay below the clouds so that we could see the sharp cliffs and massive glaciers. Many times we were so close that the proximity warning would enunciate "500" warning us that we were within 500 feet of the terrain. But I never felt scared. My 12-year old daughter was petrified to board the plane, but soon she began to enjoy herself and now she'll tell you that flightseeing was one of her favorite activities in Alaska. Our glacier landing was as smooth as silk. What an awesome feeling to stand in such a majestic place! After we took-off again, the pilot found a hole in the clouds and after a steep assent we popped out above the clouds for a perfectly clear view of Denali's summit. WOW! If you have any chance to take this trip - DO IT!

Visited Talkeetna November 1-4 2002. Stayed at the Susitna River Lodge. Outstanding facilities; clean and friendly with a beautiful view from the cabin of Susitna River and some of the peaks in Denali park.
Although "sleepy" this time of year we enjoyed visiting with the locals, shopping and flight seeing. There wasn't any snow so mushing, or cross country skiing was not available.
Breakfast at the Road House Inn was fabulous!
Had a great time!!
