Everyone I met in Talkeetna swears it was the inspiration for Cicely, Alaska in the TV show, Northern Exposure. I can believe that. Talkeetna is an out-of-the-way, quirky little village about 80 miles north of Anchorage and about 15 miles off the highway to Fairbanks. Sited at the junction of three rivers and near Mt Denali (AKA Mt McKinley), it is a center for sight-seer's, fishing, hunting, and almost always the base for people attempting to climb Denali. It has a few neat little cafes/bars, and several frontier-style "hotels". I stayed in the Talkeetna Roadhouse and had a great time. The roadhouse has been continually operated as such since the early 1940's and is a step back in time. They have great food, wonderful friendly people, and adequate accomodations. The only drawback was separate bathrooms down the hall with showers that had only two settings-frigid and scalding. There are flight-seeing trips, river jet-boats, hunting and fishing opportunities, and a rever-side RV park. It is also a scheduled stop on the Alaska Railroad so it's easy to get by road or rail. If you ever saw Northern Exposure and thought Cicely would be a neat place to visit, you'll love Talkeetna.
