“Worth it if you are there during the ranger presentation on Mt Mckinley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

The museum itself was interesting, but more of a way to pass time. The presentation on climbing Mt. Mckinley was the best presentation we heard during our entire trip. The ranger is a great speaker and his delivery makes you understand a little bit of what the climbers experience. This was something we could not have obtained just through reading and looking at displays. The presentation is worth a lot more than the $3 admission price. I don't know where the timings are normally posted but we saw a flyer for it at the train station.

“Talkeetna Historical Society”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

Driving back from Denali to Anchorage, it was strongly suggested that we make a stop in Talkeetna. 14 miles off the main north-south highway, we begrudgingly did it. The town is small and the actual building for the Historical Society may be a bit hard to find, but if you invest that time, you will find it very worthwhile. Surely there are hundreds of antique trinkets, many things specific to Alaska and life in that state.

What we didn't know was the connection this town has had with Mount Denali (McKinley). Inside the Society's "Transportation" building was a large scale model of the entire Denali mountain range showing all the most popular and historic routes to the summit. We were told that a National Park Service ranger was going to put on a program at 2:30pm, so after taking the town in, we returned. What a history, how impressive this ranger's knowledge was and how rich we are today for making that 14 mile diversion.

You don't have to be a climber to enjoy the entire history. And oh yeah, while you are there, walk the town and meet some of the local artists selling some unique and modestly priced goods, plus get a taste of the local fare in the many restaurants. You'll be talking about Talkeetna.

“Worth Your Time If You Like History”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

We walked in late on a park ranger's talk about historical expeditions to Mt. McKinley, so we were a tad disappointed about that. It would be nice if you knew it was going on as soon as you walked in, say, if they listed it on a chalkboard out front. So we had walked through the exhibits about the town when we could have been hearing the live presentation, which we didn't know was going on. This place is worth 20 minutes of your time if you're strolling through Talkeetna. It helps bring the history of the mountain climbing expeditions to life.

“Small but very interesting, great local history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

Well worth the $3 fee. Plan for about 30-45 mins. It is small but the town is small! Has a very rich history though. Great photographs. Some pretty cool artifacts.
