We stayed in the upstairs suite in early September. The place is a little out of the way, but after you drive it once, it's no big deal. Kind of nice, away from town. We hoped to see a moose, but didn't. We arrived early and Mike greeted us and was able to get us in earlier than the usual check-in time, which was great. Upon our first sight of the suite, we were thrilled. We had been traveling around Alaska for about a week at this point and this looked like a great place to crash, do some laundry, repack and regroup. And it was. Although after we were there for a night or so, we started noticing some maintenance issues. Maybe this is commonplace in Alaska, especially in log houses, but it made us wonder if other corners were being cut. The ceiling in the bathroom leaked, tiles were cracked, the floor of the shower was yellowed. My husband took a towel from the shelf after his first shower and there was a long hair stuck in the fold. There were also sheets that sat in the washing machine until our second day there, when we told Kathy she acted surprised and put them in the dryer. I ended up taking them out of the dryer and folding them. The rods in the closet were completely crooked. The carpet had a huge bump in the middle of the room that I tripped on at least 3 times. But the bed was very comfortable, and except for the barking sled dogs nearby, it was very quiet. The house itself is beautiful. Kathy very generously let us use the washer and dryer, and even her soap - which was really terrific. We didn't eat anything there, we ate breakfast at the Roadhouse each morning. We spent some time talking with Mike, he had some very interesting stories about Alaska to share. All in all, a good place to stay, was just a little disappointed with the upkeep.
The upstairs suite is private and has the benefit of the washer/dryer. A definite plus if you'r...

We are appreciative of all reviews, and sometimes we must agree when someone points outs areas of concern, things that were already on our must do list. After a very busy season we were able to take the opportunity to do some of the maintenance listed in this review. We had spent the first 4 years of owning this property doing major repairs and now this winter. I am happy to say we were able to get to some of cosmetic repairs. Retile the bathtub surround (broken tiles), a new concrete kitchen countertop (was broken tiles), painting and re- stretching carpets. I'm sure there will never be an end to another must do project, but we are proud of where we started with this property to where it is now. We hope our guests enjoy each new project that we undertake to make their stay, enjoyable, clean, and comfortable.
