“Traders' likes their pool a lot more than I do...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2008

During a visit to see my daughter this past July in Yap, we relaxed by the pool at Traders' Ridge Resort. The pool is very nice and the staff is friendly and helpful. We did have to pay to use the pool, and it was explained to us that usually this is private for guests in order to maintain peace and quiet for the guests. I found this odd, considering one day while at the pool there was a young child swinging from the balcony of the hotel and screaming. My daughter explained that this child belongs to the new hotel managers! We didn't really pay that much to use the pool and the rest of our time spent there was very pleasant, but if I were a guest I would have a problem with young children running around unattended. For the most expensive resort on Yap, they need to make sure parents are keeping an eye on their children, especially if those children belong to the managers!

Stayed 4 days at Trader's Ridge Resort, while in Colonia, Yap on business. The hotel rooms are suprisingly spacious and nicely decorated and furnished. The staff, especially George, James, Cynthia, and Samrina were all very courteous and friendly. Considering the lack of sand beaches on Yap (yes an island with no beaches) the swimming pool is a nice luxury when you lack the time or inclination to go diving. The hotel is the priciest one I found in Yap and comparatively I don't know if it is that much better than Manta Ray Bay, O'keefe's, or ESA. The food at the Poolside Cafe was varied, well prepared, and tasty. Again pricewise, $15.00 for breakfast is a little steep, but it is Micronesia where everything is a little steeper than it should be. My only complaint was having arrived at 9:30 PM on a Saturday I could not find one open restaurant or bar anywhere in Colonia, including my hotel. I was told later that Friday night is the party night in Yap, so plan accordingly.

We spent 6 nights at Traders Ridge and we really enjoyed our stay in Yap, which is a beautiful island.

The hotel is a very nice wooden colonial-style building, located in the main village Colonia.
We chose the Oceanview room, which had a beautiful view on the Chamorro bay.
At the time we were there (Aug08) the hotel had just few more guests, so it was like having the hotel all for us!
New management was just arrived, and they were very busy with hotel arrangements, so we just met them few times.

PLUS
- all activities booked through the hotel (land tour, snorkelling, fishing) were well organized and enjoyable. Guides are very nice and they give you lot of info and details about local kustom in Yap.
- despite other comments, the food was very good and the menu offers a great variety of local food and international dishes adapted to local taste and ingredients. (we got fresh sashimi from our catch!)
- local staff is friendly and efficient

MINUS
-breakfast is high priced (15$) and it was not really good, so we decided to have our breakfast at the local bakery

This is a wonderful place to stay. The food is done by Ryan from Texas, and he truly wants to please. He will make you something special if you don't like what is on the menu. We did an island trip to learn about the people of Yap and a snorkeling trip to see the Manta Rays, both we booked thru the resort and were excellant. Many people come here just to dive, but don't miss out on an island tour to the stone money banks and men's houses. Of all the FSM islands Yap has retained its culture. The four days we were at the resort, there was only one other room filled which was great for us. All the employees want to help from getting you ice water at the pool to running thru the rain to get you an umbrella so you don't get wet. Chris, the manager. and his wife are there to help and do. If you go to Yap, stay here, it will not disappoint.

We stayed at one of the other hotel on Yap but by farmost this hotel is the nicest. We visit it a few times for lunch and dinner and we we're a little bit dissapointed not to stay here.

The staff is so unbelievable friendly, they will make you feel like home.

A negative side is the food (dinner mostly). We do not say it's bad but it need some attention. The young chef Ryan from Texas need to learn more about how to serve food in a 5* restaurant. The price/quality is not perfect and that's a shame for such a pretty resort.

We still advise this hotel for your stay. Especially for the diving. Unfortunately we had to go with the crowded boats but with them we saw only a few divers per boat.

For divers, the choice is between Manta Bay and Traders Ridge. For charm and class, as well as diving, Traders Ridge has Manta Bay beat, hands down. Our room was lovely, overlooking the pool and bay. The building is all new, but built to look like an old colonial mansion. There are wood floors, period funishings, and everything is very quaint. The place was incredibly quiet when we were there (low season, July), and we were one of two couples or the only couple in the whole place! There are supposedly two restaurants, but the more "upscale" one upstairs wasn't open due to so few people there. The food, for the most part was excellent, as was the service. The atmosphere in the dining room was also extremely pleasant and classy, with period jazz or other mellow music in the background. I preferred diving with Traders Ridge over Manta Bay - Manta Bay was mobbed with obnoxious photographers with their ridiculously bulky camera gear, elbowing other divers to get a good shot of the mantas. We, on the other hand, had the boat to ourselves, and got to the best sites well before the pokey Manta Bay boats. The dive shop manager seems concerned about safety issues and ensuring the divers manage to get to the best sites to see what they want to see. Manta Bay is worth walking over to and having a drink, but you'll be glad you chose to stay at Traders Ridge instead.

We stayed four nights at Traders Ridge. It's probably the best in Yap (there are only 138 rooms in the entire area) but regardless, it's a comfortable hotel. You can go their website to view photos so I won't describe the facility except to say it's clean and the staff is friendly (almost too friendly if that's possible). The rooms are large and comfortable. The hotel sits about a block from the water, which afforts a nice view of the channel and catches any breeze that happens to pass by. The hotel was practically empty when we were there and the staff devoted themselves to making us feel at home. The young American chef is new and the food needs work (other guests agreed with us). There aren't many choices of restaurants on the island and we'd been told it was the best in town so we just went with the flow, it wasn't a big deal. The Activities Center is close and although I'm not a diver it looked good with a large drying room etc. We rented a boat and a friendly driver for a half-day snorkel and were very happy. They offer a half day island tour and I highly recommend it. The hotel van was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived and delivered us promptly when left. They have an airconditioned waiting room at the airport for hotel guests, which was a godsend. Our driver waited outside to make sure we didn't miss the flight, which was a very thoughtful gesture. Overall, I'd give this hotel a 'B' rating - and an 'A' if they improve the food. Happy travels!
