First of all it is important to manage your expectations when going to Pohnpei. This is not Hawaii or Tahiti, all the hotels and restaurants are run-down, there are barely enough tourists to keep the places going, so there are few facilities for tourists in general - if you want to get things done you will have to take the initiative. However, if you like getting off the beaten track and are up for a little adventure, then Pohnpei has a lot to offer. I stayed at four hotels on the island over the course of a month long vacation, including South Park, Ocean View Plaza, the Village, and Nihco's Marine Park. Nicho's was by far my favorite.
I found the bungalows here charming, with thatch roofs big verandas and air-conditioning units. They also had kitchenettes, with stove and refrigerator which was nice for self-catering. You will need to rent a car as there is nothing around the hotel within walking distance (which is one of the reasons we liked it). They have Kayaks available free for your use. The nearby coral is not worth snorkeling, but boats are available for hire to take you out to the outer reef and other attractions. This place has the only beach on Pohnpei, it is only 100 feet long but nice for a short stroll (other beaches are on surrounding islands and require a boat trip to get to). There is also a large salt-water lagoon full of tropical fish which the local kids love to go swimming in, though it is a little murky. One of the highlights of our trip was taking the kayaks on a paddle through the mangrove swamps and up a fresh water stream which ended in a magnificent waterfall. (Be aware you can easily get lost in the mangroves if you don't a good sense of direction.)
Things not to Miss in Pohnpei:
A day trip to the ruins of Nan Madol,
Snorkeling with the Manta Rays,
Hiking to one of the islands many waterfalls,
An overnight trip to Ant Atoll,
Exploring the WWII fort on top of Sokeh's Rock.
All you can eat Sashimi at one of the local bars.
