“Most comfortable accommodation in Ohakune”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

Had the pleasure of a night in this establishment last weekend and while we were only there for one night we enjoyed the space and facilities of the 4 bedroom chalet.

The beds (1 king + 1 queen + 6 single) in this chalet were the best I've experienced outside of a 5 star hotel; comfortable, warm, firm and spacious. We used the king, queen and two singles and all our party agreed that the beds were tops...

The two bathrooms, two toilets and plenty of hot-water suited us well.

The kitchen was more than adequate and the parking right out side the door was very convenient.

The only let down and this was very minor one was it did not have Sky TV. Free-View is ok but SKY TV rules.

All in all a very comfortable, well priced experience.

We booked a room in the lodge. Nearing the end of the school holiday, Ohakune was fully booked, and there was not much choice. The reception area was very cosy with a log fire burning, and the staff were very friendly. This all changed when we saw the room which was very drab and uninviting, but thankfully it was "only a place to sleep". The dreariness continued through to the community / lounge area, which had a few tables, open-plan kitchen, pool table and TV. In one corner was an old piano. The kitchen untensils were old and knives as blunt as spoons. No coffee plunger, so had to buy one in town.
The room had a double and single bed in it, with a panel heater on the wall, which did keep the room warm. There was no heater in the bathroom, and no extractor fan. A couple of bedside lamps would be a nice touch to the room, and a cupboard, or at least a hanging rack or hooks would be useful too. The walls were paper-thin. I could hear the conversation of the people next to us. Worst was when we tried to sleep that night, the guy next door snored liked a trooper and we got no sleep! Kids chased each other up and down the corridors until late at night. The wooden staircase close to our room did not help, as you could hear every footstep of every person using it.
Not all was bad. The spa was great to use. The motel is conveniently located to get up the mountain, and there are great walks just close-by.
For the price we paid and for what we got, it may have been a better choice to book into a backpackers where you would expect a bit of noise, but for less money. The rooms and the kitchen/lounge area could do with a serious make-over, and the bathrooms should be fitted with extractor fans.

The reason we picked this place was that they are OK with one-night stays. I booked just in time (Thurs arvo for Sat night) The under-floor heating made the whole unit cosy and very pleasant. One person felt it was too hot in bed but I had the window open upstairs and was fine. The spa was an added bonus; half an hour was more than enough for our needs. Friendly service, highly recommended. Didn't use the restaurant as we always take our own food.

We booked last minute and arrived at a warm comfortable Mezzanine Motel. Very clean and the set up was great. Boys were upstairs. They provided us with a DVD player for the boys to watch a movie. Could not have been more helpful. Highly recommend. The boys enjoyed the spa after skiing all day. Thank you.

Room Tip: Great Place to stay. On direct route to Turoa, very helpful and accomodating. We had unit 6 which...

We only stayed one night but I am afraid that was enough. I had to ring to get someone to come and check us in after seeing a note taped to the door. Was talked out of having the breakfast I had booked. The rooms were very cold with two small heaters to warm up a four bedroom chalet.

Lovely stay thank you. Warm clean motel unit, Comfy bed and Freindly staff. Well situated just one block away from the Powder Keg restaurant and within easy walking distance to bush/river walking tracks. We will stay here again on our next visit to Ohakune.

Room Tip: WE stayed in the Studio motel units

I would not recommend this motel & lodge to young families. The room was dirty and extremely old with many facilities broken or falling apart. I understand it gets cold in Ohakune in the winter but the fact that the heating in the room did not stay on during the night meant trying to keep young children warm was impossible. It also didn't help that the hot water ran out after one baby bath and one shower. This should not happen in a room that can house six people. The bedroom did not have curtains on all of the windows, which meant changing your clothes, sleeping with a street light shining in, and staying warm was difficult. The spa is a nice bonus, however, I would describe it as a lukewarm, dirty bath, with jets that you can't turn on. When our issues were brought to the attention of the staff, she did not want to listen to our complaints and actually responded by charging us for an extra adult that they had forgotten to charge us for when checking in. Needless to say we will not be back.

We are sorry this family did not enjoy their stay - Just a few things to comment on:
Charging for the extra person came about after we realized that this group had booked for 4 adults but there were in fact 5 persons staying. The classic "sneak-in-an-extra-without-paying." This is something we do view as theft.
Whatever this families experience in 2012, I can assure all potential guests that we have continued to renovated our units on an ongoing basis. The 2 bedroom apartment (where this group stayed) has a new bathroom & shower. There are definitely blackout curtains on ALL windows and heaters {that stay on!} in every room.
We have also recently renovated the En suite rooms with new bathrooms, carpets, fridges etc.
We have a very high standard of cleanliness and service - Please do come and see for yourselves.
