“somewhat disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Avila is a lovely town and worth the weekend we spent there. The parador is well-located and the building itself is quite nice. Our room had a view of the garden. But the room itself completely lacked in character, which is exactly what one would like to have in a parador. The furniture was somewhat tired and not terribly comfortable, the small rugs on the floor had no slip mats beneath them, and the lighting was pretty poor. We are visiting paradors on their 5-day cards and this parador charged a very high supplement for our 3rd person (child), making the room pricier than it deserved to be. Slightly better than a Marriott.

Located right next to the ancient walls in the old quarter of Avila, this parador was easy to find with the sat nav and was signposted. Trick is to get the right gate! We got a parking spot in the hotel’s small car park, but there is an underground facility too.
We stopped one night en route to the north coast and really enjoyed our stay. As other reviewers have commented, it’s worth paying extra for a garden room overlooking the terrace – plus Avila’s compact size means you can see the sights in a day.
Excellent restaurants can be found a very short walk away (try the delicious roast suckling pig!) and you can sip Gin & Tonics the size of goldfish bowls in one of the lovely squares. A walk along the walls to take in spectacular views across the city and surrounding countryside should not be missed either – followed by a much-needed refreshing beer if you do this in the summer heat!

Room Tip: Garden rooms have nice views overlooking the walls, garden and terrace

Stayed two nights in the Parador of Avila whilst driving from Santander to southern Spain. Lovely old building within the walls of this beautiful city. Chose a room facing onto the garden. This was a good size, very comfortable and quiet. Very pleasant terrace in the garden to enjoy a glass of wine. There is free parking which is a great advantage in the city. The hotel is near the Plaza Mayor where there is a choice of restaurants there and in the surrounding streets so we didn't have dinner in the hotel. Also in the Plaza is the excellent Pasteleria Munoz Iselma which has great pastries as an alternative to the hotel breakfast.

Room Tip: Pay the supplement to have a superior garden facing room.

The Parador is good, but i had seen more beautiful paradores.. The rooms weer not big and the view was not special. Less parking place. The city is beautiful and there is lot to be seen. For the Same price there are a lot of places that are very beautiful.

This hotel has most of the features of the Paradores: nice old building, excellent service, good location... However, my stay there was somewhat disappointing for various reasons. The bedding left to be desired and my room was rather noisy (I guess a room on the top floor would be a better choice, if available). I also found that the breakfast was not as attractive as in other Paradores in the past - although this may be part of an overall trend of cost-cutting measures in the chain. In addition, travelers should be aware that parking is rather limited in the surrounding area. I got the last spot in the underground garage, which required delicate maneuvering! And this involved an overnight charge of 14 € (Amigos are no longer exempt, effective 1/1/2013)

Room Tip: Top floor.

We have just returned from a fortnight's travelling in Spain and stayed for 2 nights at the Parador. The views approaching the old town are awesome-we were fortunate that it was still sunny and glorious to appreciate the view as we didn't arrive until the evening. We found the directions fine with the help of the sat nav and the Parador was sign posted. The garage parking is literally behind the hotel so that was a great help. We went to the Reception and they told us where the garage was located, then we went to the entrance- rang the buzzer at the side and they let us in. Our room was very nice and comfortable. There was a pop concert on that evening until 12.30am but that wasn't a problem as we enjoyed it To give the hotel credit, they did inform Brittany Ferries to warn us about this in advance. Anyway, it was a bit of a bonus to have the entertainment! I wouldn't describe it as luxurious as I did notice that some of the furniture looked tired and the furniture and fittings could do with a refurbishment. On our first night, we had dinner at the restaurant which was Ok . On our second night, we had a meal in the town in the main plaza area. This is such a lively place with good atmosphere. Large range of cafes to choose from. Would recommend guests to eat out and save their appetites for their great breakfasts. The Parador is situated within minutes from the centre so it is placed in a prime area. The breakfasts are wonderful, such a wide choice. We have stayed in another Parador elsewhere and think that their breakfasts are a treat. It is nice to have small tapas type dishes to choose from for your breakfast. The staff at this Parador are helpful and obliging. Nice place to stay and visit.

We stayed at this Parador for one night on our way south. We have been to Avila before so found the hotel quite easily, but could imagine some people finding it difficult negotiating the one way traffic in the old town. Parking is a problem but the Parador does have it's own spaces free of charge round the back. We do have the "amigos" loyalty card so tend to favour Paradores as they can offer some good deals when booking on line. We usually go for the Unique Tarif. The Parador is typically in an old building with what looks like a new wing added on. The standard is what you would expect. We did not eat in the restaurant. We think the price for breakfast is too high especially as we don't eat much!

Room Tip: Higher rooms have less noise from guests above. I was woken by guests coming back in quite late and...
