“Great hotel, ghastly restaurant!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

We booked into this hotel having stayed there a few months earlier. The room, as before, was delightful although we did not, this time, have the panoramic view of the walled city which was a bit of a disappointment. But someone has to have a room facing the back and this time it was us.
The rooms are well furnished and appointed, the public areas likewise. It is a shame that the hotel does not have a public lounge area which it could sorely do with.
The bar, such as it is, is at the end of the building and the only way to reach it is to go outside into the rain and cold to get to it. It also seems to serve the clientele of the fuel station next door.
The restaurant, however, is ghastly. The menu is limited and not very inspiring. The waitress served us very quickly, too quickly - she tried to take our plates before we had finished in order to give us the next course. She lurks, like a spider at the back of the room and pounces over to the table. The body language was that she wanted to serve everybody quickly so she could clear up and go home! What we ate was awful, my cutlets had been deep fried and so were dry, tough and chewy. My partner's sweetbreads were slimy and virtually inedible past the first two mouthfuls. The chips that accompanied them were not cooked and were soggy and cold. We will NOT be dining there again. We have spotted a Grill down the road so will use that instead. We do not take breakfast at the hotel as the breakfast room is soul-less and on the first floor - looks a bit corporate and bland. We notice that not many other people use it either as it is always empty.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this hotel. Very well priced, this hotel offers superb rooms extremely well furnished. Our room had a wonderful view of the walled city which just made our stay all the better. 15/10 for the room. 6/10 for the weird dark bathroom area. Using black tiles with minimal lighting and the mirror too far away does not make for easy make up and hairdressing. The effect of this lighting/dark tile combination made it almost like being in a lift with shiny walls and trying to see one's face and hair clearly in them!!! Will these [obviously] male designers please stop doing this!

The restaurant was nice although the furnishings with the 'wedding reception style' loose covers on the chairs made us feel we were in a marquee! The menu was good with plenty of choices. The wine list was hilarious with some at 405 Euros.

There is no bar at the hotel. Instead you have to go outside, walk the length of the hotel to the Cafeteria on the corner. It is part of the main hotel but they do not allow people to go through the hotel to it for some obscure reason.

The underground car park gave us security for our vehicle.

We have already planned a return trip in March.

I stayed at the hotel for 3 days in July. We were a group of 20 people. It was a spacious clean modern room. The hotel is a bid far from the city center but I did not mind because I enjoyed walking. The view was magnificent. The only thing I did mot enjoy there was the food.

The hotel was almost full of young chess players because the Spanish chess team championships under 14 and 16 years old were held in Avila.
Therefore none of the participants had to pay for the hotel and we all had a full board. Some of them were lucky and got into the "good rooms". My team and I got the standard rooms, we had to share a twin room between three so I had to sleep in an extra bed (which was not that comfortable as the other two).
Something I really liked about the hotel was the staff, the waiters were extremely nice and very friendly and one of the receptionists was very attentive.
On the day of our arrival it was very warm so we quickly went to the reception and asked where the swimming pool was, so when we heard there wasn't one we where very shocked.
I liked the terraces because there was a fantastic view of the city's wall.
The hotel was not that far away from the entrance of the wall, maybe a 10 minute walk.

Room Tip: Do not go to the standard rooms.

We stayed for two nights because of parking issues. They did offer free parking in front of the hotel. I have to agree with others that the front desk isn't the friendliest bunch of folks, but they did give us a good rate. Breakfast seemed overpriced and not much to look at when I peaked in on it. We didn't mind the walk into town, but I could see where that may bother some people. You have to get a room on the top floors facing the walls to make it feel worthwhile. We also noticed a sewage type smell eminating from the bathroom whenever it was "cleaned." They room itself appeared clean and a decent size. Elevators and airconditioning were nice. There is a bar next door if you don't want to use the hotel facilities.

Room Tip: Towards the top facing the walls.
