“Charming hotel, good value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2010

When I first looked at the photos it looked a bit too posh for my boyfriend and I, but then I read the reviews which mostly said the hotel was a bit frayed at the edges, and then I knew it would be perfect for us. Its true the hotel is worn out, and the toilet wobbled every time we sat on it, but we found this hilarious and all this just added to the charm of the hotel. If they do the hotel up, it will lose its charm and the prices will go up. I understand why some people weren't happy - don't quite know how the hotel managed to get a 4* rating, but then what do people expect to get for £18 each a night? For that price we stayed in a beautiful historic building in a perfect location, had a large room, a large bathroom and a view over the square onto the cathedral! What more do people want? If the room is a bit frayed, so what! As long as the room is clean. To sum up, if you are happy with a clean room, and like character and are happy with a simple life, then this hotel is perfect.

The air conditioning didn't work in the rooms. When our tour guide spoke to the owner, he was dismissive of her concerns! Each of our tour group's pilgrims had two choices:

(1) Open window and try to sleep when the locals were celebrating Spain's World Cup victory until 5am
(2) Close window and reduce noise at the expense of a very hot and stuffy room

The hotel has a great location, close to the walls and the cathedral of Avila. The staff is very friendly. Unfortunately there is no more good to be said about this fully worn out hotel. Stains in teh floors and the ceilings. Furniture that is broken or damaged. Holes in about everything that is made of tissue. The price they ask you to pay is completely outrageous. I blame myself that I haven't checked this website before booking it, but I was in a hurry to organize a replecament for a suddenly cancelled trip. Be sure to avoid this place unless you like extreme sloppy places.

Cheaper than the Parador, but for good reasons: the hotel does certainly not deserve its 4 stars. The rooms are chastly furnished, at 35 degrees no air conditioning was working, the shower was either cold or boiling hot, the breakfast was simple, the entire atmosphere reflected the 50s during which it was apparently established within an old city palace. Room door had been forced open and was unrepaired.
The location next to the cathedral is gorgeous, however.

This hotel is initiall great to look at with a very grand reception area and common area.

The rooms however are dated and the service is poor! Having discovered that the two single beds in our room were fixed to the wall, a very unhelpful guy on reception informed us that the hotel has no double rooms, when you can see clearly in the review photo's here that they have! This is having specifically booked a double room...

The only saving grace was the cheesy muzak you can pump out of the room hi-fi system, the delightful town of Avila itself, and the fantastic Cafe Palomar which served delicious pincho's and raciones into the night during the fiesta.

Nice hotel in a very good location. We got a room looking directly onto the Cathedral. The room was quite large and very clean, only fault is that the bath had some nasty cracks.. The hotel in general probably needs better maintenance, but on the whole it was very good value for money.

This hotel is fraying at the edges, both literally and metaphorically. Clearly the management cannot afford the necessary maintenance at the prices charged but cannot justify charging more. The room and bathroom were large and the breakfast was excellent value. The public rooms are dark and uninviting and the bar/cafeteria was closed during our stay (two nights). The hotel car parking was full. No way is this a four star hotel but, at the price we paid, we were not too upset.

  • Liked — Spaciousness of the room
  • Disliked — It was "tatty"
