“High End Hotel in Avila”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2009

We spent a short while in Avila, after spending the first half of the day in Segovia, and stayed at this hotel. It is rated as the top hotel in Avila, and our experience was very positive. We got a great rate for a Sunday night stay, making it that much more appealing. The hotel structure itself is quite old, and pictures in the central courtyard provide a testament to the work involved in turning an eyesore into a beautiful hotel. Hotel staff were coldly efficient the few times I had to deal with them. The room we got was a standard room, and very spacious; there was a writing desk, chairs and a wardrobe. The bed was very large and comfortable, with the hard mattress we typically found in Spain. The bathroom was also spacious, and beautifully tiled. The room had air conditioning, but the hotel did not turn it on at this time of year, despite it being a bit warm outside. An electric panel operated a skylight above, normally a nice touch, but it was of little use and provided no appreciable air circulation.

Parking in the hotel is extra, and pricey. As it was a quiet time of year we parked outside the city walls, perhaps a 10 minute walk. Driving into the city during high season must be a challenge, what with narrow streets and loads of pedestrians, but there is no way to drop off bags other than doing so. Parking outside the walls would be a similar challenge in busy times, making the convenience of their garage more of a necessity at these times. The hotel had a high-end restaurant, pricey and purportedly very good, but we opted for local fare. We had a drink in the beautiful courtyard, and staff was efficient, drink prices were reasonable, and we got a very tasty tidbit to nibble on with our drink, gratis.

I would heartily recommend this hotel. I wouldn’t expect the 60 euro rate we received to be available often, but times are tough and it is worth the effort to research. Avila itself is worth a day wandering around, not more.

We stayed one night at Palacio de los Velada during Semana Santa. We actually had a difficult time finding the hotel in walled city (it was my first experience driving inside a walled city, honestly), but once I called the hotel, it was very clear. The hotel is just inside the walls near the San Vicente entrance. There is no street parking and you have to check in BEFORE you can get into the garage which is a little tricky since there's really no place to store your car while you do all of that. I eventually just parked in a possibly illegal spot at the base of the hill and ran back to check in.

We booked our room through Booking.com and got a great rate of 59.99EUR. The parking is an additional 17EUR, but you really don't have much choice since there is no real street parking in the area. It is also a very secure underground garage which is nice.

The staff's English wasn't the greatest, but between our limited Spanish and their limited English, we figured out what was necessary for check in. We were given a very small room on the East side in the "attic" portion (slanting roof with only window a skylight). While the room was nice, it wasn't the nicest place we stayed in Spain and yet, it was the priciest (including the parking). The bathroom was probably the best part of the room. It was very large and lunxurious and all in marble. Fluffy towels and nice toiletries (including a toothbrush and razor).

The bed was spacious and comfortable, tho I wish it would have had a duvet rather than a polyester coverlet. Also, to someone else's point, the A/C didn't work at all and instead just blew out hot air. The room was very very stuffy (since it's in the attic) and we had to sleep with the skylight open all night.

The location is really fantastic and once there, you can walk to everything. It's right across the street from the cathedral and we walked all the way around the walls. However, we had gone downstairs on the morning of checkout to ask if we would be able to leave the car in the garage for about an hour after checkout and were told "No problem." We went all the way back upstairs, got our bags and were checking out and a different person told us it was not possible to leave the car. The woman we had spoken to was no longer at the counter. I described her and said she had told us it was OK. The new woman had to call over a manager. It took about 10 more minutes to convince them we had been told we could leave the car. They finally surrendered and let us leave it. When we went downstairs, the garage was completely EMPTY from everyone checking out, so it's not like we were taking up a valuable space until 1 p.m. You can't even check in until 3 p.m., so the garage wouldn't be full again for 2 more hours.

I thought the hotel was nice, but the staff not so much. Of all the places we stayed in Spain, they were the coldest. One actually "rolled her eyes" at us when we were trying to square away the garage.

We drove into Avila on a cold December day. Palacio de los Velada was exactly the treat we needed. With good directions the hotel is pretty easy to find, only a short way inside the Avila city walls, much easier than most walled city hotels. Parking costs 16 Euros but is worth it with a very secure underground garage. We got a good winter rate of about 85 Euros including breakfast. Room was spacious and well designed. No English channels on the television. Wireless Internet is free. The atrium is a real visual treat with good bar and light food service. The breakfast buffet is diverse and includes hot and cold items. Best of all it is just across from the Cathedral and shopping. Best hotel experience so far in Spain.

There are plenty of other hotels in the area. And a lot of them are probably also cheaper. But this hotel was so impressive and so perfectly located, that I just think they give great value for money. What else can you ask for?
Close to the Cathedral (literally a stone throw away), close to a zillion restaurants, close if you want to walk on the city wall.
If this hotel was in London, they would charge around 250 GBP/335 EUR) a night - we paid one third of that!
Give yourself this chance to splash out a bit and take a truly great hotel when staying in Avila.

Oh - and go to "Restaurante Tres Siglos" for dinner - I have lived in Spain for 3½ years and they served me a dinner that was definitely in the Top 3 for all my Spanish restaurant visits.
Ask somebody for the way - it is only around 200 meter from the hotel in the pedestrian street with a lot of restaurants next to each other. Go for their Cuchinillo (Suckling Pig) if you want the best.

  • Liked — The glass covered patio
  • Disliked — The parking possibilities - you could use the expensive hotel car park, but really - go for street parking and some meter walking ;-)

I stayed here for one night, April 12, 2008 on a drive back to Madrid. I really liked this hotel. Although it is hard to drive to, once you find the hotel and its garage, it is a great place to stay. It is right next to the Cathedral and you can walk to all places quite easily in this relatively small town. The common area of the hotel is a courtyard that is very beautiful and the rooms are located along walkways that surround the courtyard. Our deluxe room was just about 100 Euro a night which I thought was great value for the price. The room was definitely large by European standards and very clean. We didn't eat at the hotel, but went to a small restaurant in the neighborhood that we really enjoyed (I wish I had taken a card to tell you the name). The hotel has a nice little bar in the lower level.

We arrived late afternoon in Avila for one night stay at the Palacio. I was assigned a room in the attic which was very hot and a bit cramped. I asked to be moved as the room was so hot and the air-conditioning did not work. The helpful man on the front desk advised me that the airconditioning was only available from May to September. I asked to be moved to a more spacious room and this he did reluctantly. The rooms are furnished to a good standard but there are cigarette burns on the carpet from unthoughtful visitors and the sheets had a small tear. The breakfast buffet was above average and enjoyable. Would I stay there again? Yes I would provided it was when the A/C was available.

Well, this is probably the best price for value we had in Castille.
Location is perfect, in front of the Cathedral, could not be better. The hotel is a big think of 150 rooms, but you really don't feel it, seems a boutique hotel. The old building has been carefully upgraded and renovated (pics are on display about the work, it is impressive). The covered patio (courtyard) is stunning, perfect for a quiet drink, rooms are nicely decorated.
Staff was OK, nothing special to say, good or bad. Only (small) bad point would be the ugly false patio that they use for breakfast, but this is a very minor criticism.
Definitely a place to recommend.
