As a big fan of the Victoria Hotels, having stayed in Hoi An 4 times, Cantho twice and this hotel twice in recent years, I couldn't help but feel this place needs an overhaul.
The train trip is great - and the advantage of having a porter help you with luggage (especially travelling with 2 and 4 year olds) at both ends makes this a much better option that the regular train - not to mention better toilets and bedding.
In truth, this was probably not the trip to do with toddlers. Sapa is all about hikes and market tours, which were not practical with 2 small children (unless we had brought our own car seats from our home in Hanoi). So with bad weather, and rooms not available for the first morning or last afternoon (we had 2 nights in the hotel), we spent alot of time just sitting in the foyer.
A room with soft toys and a TV and DVD (but no DVDs) is not a kids club. By Sunday night, the lack of public space options (especially on a cold wet afternoon) had me feeling for the other patrons as several children became increasingly bored waiting for the transfers.
The pool (indoors up on the hill) had amazing views but only a few beds. I'm also not sure how a set of gym equipment beside the pool can be classed as a fitness room.
Our family room was spacious but a bit tired and the locks on doors need replacing. The heaters on the wall are dangerous (hot to touch) and a lack of air-conditioning made the room stuffy. Bedding was only a doona with no top sheets. The shower was poor and the toiletries very lacking for the standard of hotel.
The food was ok. Breakfast was a bit monotonous and not up to the usual Victoria standard - although the pastries and pho were very good. Our meals (duck and salmon) on the first night were very high quality, but not as good the following night.
The one thing that stands out though is the service especially staff in the restaurant who went out of their way to look after us, even relocating us (and our mains) to our room one night when we misjudged how tired the children were.
For now, the Victoria is probably the best hotel in town, with one of the best views, but things change quickly in Vietnam and I suspect that without a refurbishment in coming years, the Victoria will struggle to maintain that position.
Family room with a queen bed and 3 singles was a great option for a family - and had an amazing view...
