“Hotel and train experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Characterful Comfort in the Mist, preceded by on overnight journey on their 'Victoria Express'.
Had a glorious couple of days in Sapa, despite the constant mist. We embraced the atmosphere which reminded us so much of staying in a snow lodge without the snow, but still cold outside. We stayed in a suite which was delightfully decorated with local knick knacks and was always snug. Yes, it's not new and perfect but this is Sapa, Vietnam not New York and it is miles from anywhere.
Enjoyed the pool and spa. Breakfast offered lots of choice for all nationalities and local fare with warm wood fire.
Arriving early on the Victoria Express expect to be homeless until 2pm. We managed to get into one of two rooms early as my wife was ill. Most appreciative but don't expect it as some guests don't check out till noon. That said, we left at 9am on our last morning to go to Bac Ha markets (a looooong drive, 2 1/2 hours at least) and dubious as to whether it is worth it, although you will not see buffalo, birds, pigs, horses, being traded elsewhere (and you may not want to!). BUT you do get dropped off at a restaurant near the train station and 'Ha' (our guide) made sure we were comfortable and looked after. So you avoid the trip back to Sapa but must leave at 9ish on the Sunday to make the markets if you chose to.

Sapa is so beautiful, and you want it to stay like that. The Victoria Resort is committed to keeping the environment as it is. It was nice to stay in a hotel chain which takes this very seriously. The hotel itself has fabulous rooms, and great facilities. It is a short walk to town, and local restaurants and the market in Sapa. The room, and the service was great. Breakfast was of a high standard with lots of choice.

Let me start with the Victoria Hotel train trip to Sapa, because that seemed like the ideal way to get to their hotel. Unfortunately the continual smashing of hard metal against even harder metal underneath our carriage for most of the way was a bit like the bad taxi ride from the airport to a hotel - it colours the rest of the stay. I can't even imagine the engineering that results in a random but constant clanging that has nothing to do with the rails themselves. I've had and enjoyed many train trips overnight. This wasn't one of them.

The hotel though was great. Lovely comfortable room and plenty of covers on the bed to snuggle up in the chilly cloud mists. Beaut breakfast with a huge buffet variety, attentive staff and a great location. Wonderful views as the clouds clear and re-align.

Dear Victoria guest,
Thank you for staying at Victoria Sapa Resort and Spa.
Thank you for all excellent comments on our hotel facilities and staffs. We are sorry to read that you didn’t enjoy your train trip on board of the Victoria. For your information, the Victoria Express Train is running on a local railway but, through cleanness, security atmosphere and service, it stays the ideal means of transportation from Hanoi to Lao Cai.
Any way, thank you for your time and sharing your experiences to our guest.

We spent 2 nights up in the hotel. At the time we stayed the fog was so thick we couldnt see any view at all. This was very exciting for the kids although a view would have been nice for a photo.

The breakfast in the hotel was the most amazing we have experienced during our 3 weeks in Vietnam, try the local Vietnamese pho and crispy pancake. Plenty of quality choices.

The rooms were quite nice, comfortable beds and good facilities. Room 124 needs the showerhead fixed though.

Overall I would recommend this hotel.

This was a gorgeous hotel in Sapa! The hotel property and location were great, a little "out of the way" until I found the secret road that I could have used. Some local near the hotel had their music cranked, and it wasn't really music more of a lecture in Vietnamese, blaring at about 0600 one morning.

Dear aaronvonhagen,

It is very nice from you to rate us 5 stars, thanks a lot.
We are sorry to read that you encountered some noise issue in our Property, but, unfortunately, this is the local people committee message to the town, which not happens every day.
To get ready for a nice day, our Spa opens at 7AM if you would like to enjoy an early swim, and our breakfast at 6.30AM as an alternative.
We will be happy to welcome you again in one of the Victoria Resort in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Firstly, if you travel to Sapa in January, buy a Gortex jacket in Hanoi or when you get to Sapa. They are really good copies and cost between $50- $70. For this price make sure you get the 2 layers. We had a guide from Hanoi come with us on the train and stay with us in Sapa. He was wonderful and made our trip even more enjoyable. The train interior was lovely, but the train is old and the track even older. It isn't the best for sleeping. The carriages are owned by the Victoria Hotel and the staff are very attentive. As we arrived to the hotel in the morning, our room wasn't ready so our guide took us on a tour of the market (where he helped my husband get an even better deal on a Gortex jacket), and the Cat cat village, home of one of the many minority people in the north. It is becoming very touristy but our guide imparted his valuable knowledge, something you wouldn't necessarily get if you did it alone. The hotel staff were very attentive and the room very comfortable. I think it is 4 star and that seems about right. The lounge, with its open fire is a great place to enjoy a drink or a hot chocolate.

Dear Jamcreek,

It is a pleasure to read your review and the tips you give to other travelers.
Depending on the weather, indeed, a warm jacket can be a good idea. Otherwise, to get warm or relax after a day tour, our Spa is happy to open its door to you as you can enjoy a treatment perfomed by one of our qualified therapists.
The train is still the best option to come up to Sapa. In the Victoria carriages, you will enjoy the comfort and service, plus, safety and hygiene is our priority, which make the trip safer.
For your information, the travel desk located in our lobby close to the reception desk will be happy to assist you and respond to any of your special request.
It will be a pleasure to welcome you again in the Alps of the Tonkin.
