We arranged a shuttle bus pick up from Lao Cai train station after travelling from Hanoi over night on Fanispann train. There was no waiting at the station. Bus cost was US$3 per person. It takes about an hour to reach Sapa. On the hotel website you'll see tour code LX001. We took that one and was supposed to be like a 3 hour trek, but is really 5 hours which was fine. It was mostly downhill, but had some steep uphill as well. Great trek for the middle aged not so fit group and we saw the Black Hmong & Red Dao minority tribe people. Haggling to buy things can be a bit draining though.
The hotel is run by a family which was extremely friendly and can not do enough for you. We were upgraded to the 4th floor, bit foggy but still great views.
I asked the Managers name and jokingly wanted to be referred to as 001 (on his badge) and his off-sider 007. We received a free bottle of red wine from Dalat which was very nice touch.
The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. No air conditioning, but it normally too cold anyway. There are fans.
He had Pho for breakfast one morning and omelettes, baguettes & jam the other times.
The hotel was in a perfect location very close to city centre, market and restaurants.
I recommend the Sapa O'Chau for advice on trekking and farm stays and also great teas.
Also the Hill Station Signature restaurant just across the road. We had smoked buffalo for one of the meals. All food here is very traditional typical what the minority tribes nearby eat. Bit expensive, but very classy place, nice music and great food and wine.
There is also the Nature View restaurant a little further down the same street. Well worth a visit.
On Sunday we were fortunate to go to Bac Ha market. $15 by shuttle bus and takes 3 hours. A tight squeeze but a fantastic market. They sell absolutely every type of food, plant, animal (buffalos, pigs ..), farming hardware & tools, clothes etc. It's only on Sunday though.
I highly recommend the Sapa Luxury Hotel for a friendly and comfortable stay in a good location at a cheap price.
Higher the better, but all rooms have views.
