Casablanca has only been open a short time but Tom, Eddie and crew have taken this budget inn and firmly planted it on the map. After arriving early A.M. tired, dirty from the long train ride, guests are treated to a complimentary breakfast or shower before checking in. Yes, FREE – that alone is totally worth it. Located in town (foreign tourist side) just off the main road, tour pickups./drop-offs is 15sec away. Recommended by our accommodations in Hanoi, a relative of Tom’s we decided to go for it after reading the reviews.
It’s all about family and the experience. They all take the time to chat or greet the guests to ensure their stay is pleasant – they really care. The best way to describe it: budget digs, paired with a family atmosphere. At Casablanca, family is key, you’ll often see Tom with his wife and daughter around playing, during quiet downtimes you’ll find their family and friends visiting Casablanca. FYI, Tom and Eddie are both expecting babies.
Rooms: worn décor but very clean. We had an upper floor room with a view of the hills (yes, it’s in town so it’s not as vast but still very pretty). Beds are firm, blankets warm, the bathroom, is older too but the shower pressure/hot water is excellent.
Pick up/Drop off: Do it, you won’t regret it as it’s really crazy. booked train pick up and drop off. We heard some of the prices tossed about at the station, trust me, Casablanca offers a fair price.
Common areas are spotless and clean (if not, Tom isn’t that far from noticing), books available for reading. Enjoy the tree of keys. Wifi/internet terminal at reception. Dining, options are very affordable and tasty. Fantastic banana pancakes, good pho and killer ginger tea. We didn't have anything else, but there were a few at dinner each night so I think the prices were pretty good along with the food.
Cons: There is currently construction down the road. They are apologetic, (work is done during the day) but seriously, what can you do?
Tours: Per usual, touring information and booking is available. They don’t try to hard sell you, if you are interested just specify private or group tours and the specifics, if not let them know. We came ill to Sapa and they took the time to check if we were ok. We asked about pricing for the Bac Ha Sunday market on Friday and told Tom Saturday to go ahead and book it only to find he already reserved spots for us. At Casablanca they take the time to ensure your Sapa visit goes smoothly, upon departed for the train we were asked if we needed any food for the train trip.
Casablanca is truly one of a kind. Stop by, stay and enjoy the conversation.
