Stayed for 4 nights from the 2nd Sept 09 and did the 101 Tastes of the Island package. We would highly recomend this package - the dinners are exceptional and the cooking class was one of the best I have done.
My only suggestion would be to book an upstairs room as the downstairs rooms, although having their own plunge pool, suffer from noise of those moving about upstairs. The plunge pools are not much good anyway whereas the main hotel pool is very good.
The service and attention to detail by staff and management at this hotel is excellent. The breakfasts are wonderful - whatever you want - they will provide.
Note - Canggu is well away from the touristy areas and traffic to get to places like Seminyak, Legian etc is horrendous. The beach is also only good for dedicated surfers as it is black sand and very rocky.

I had to write this review because I was there last summer and it was amazing. The service was friendly and warm. The rooms were great. And I just read another review about how the food was really bad, and I DISAGREE!!! We stayed for five days and enjoyed many meals at the Tugu, and they were all wonderful.

I would go back here in a heartbeat.

We live in Indonesia since 10 years and been travelling all over Asia in many 4 or 5 star hotels, but Tugu Bali is simply the best, our second home. They combine stunning architecture with humble but professional staff and great food. Great location in the Canggu Village directly by the beach, stunning sunsets and the rooms are just great. Our favorite is the Le Mayeur Villa, which really is the most romantic and sexy villa ever. I should know because I proposed here. For dining check out there many dining outlets like their warung tugu where they cook right in front of you delicious javanese and balinese food. Or try the Bale Sutra where you can choose many different menus, my favorite is the Tugudom dinner, a just amazine dining experience with dance, staff dressed up in costumes and food which is out of this world.
We cant wait to get back here, if heaven exists, that must be it

I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hotel Tugu Bali. It's a gorgeous hotel with a stunning open air lobby and amazing service. All the hotel employees knew me by name from the moment I arrived and did everything they could to take great care of me during my stay. They were very helpful in planning excursions such as surfing lessons and snorkeling. The location was beautiful. I found the distance from Kuta, etc to be ideal (Kuta itself should be avoided at all costs, I found it to be the tackiest, most touristy place I have visited on any of my travels). But given that it takes upwards of 30 minutes to get anywhere else on the island, you need to plan your excursions well. But I would much rather stay in Canggu and travel a bit, than stay anywhere else. Do not miss walking down the beach a bit to Echo Beach to eat and watch the surfers. I saw few people on the Tugu's beach, although there are plenty of surfers. Others have commented that you can't swim on the beach. I don't think I'd go out and body surf due to the waves, rocks and coral, but I had no problem going for a dip in the water while sunbathing on the beach. My suite with private pool was gorgeous and loved that the bathtub opened out onto my own private pond. The whole experience was just wonderful. I would definitely return.

My first impression upon arriving at the Tugu Bali was that it was a very nice place, but not what all the reviews had led me to believe it would be. My first impression changed very quickly. The service of this place is amazing. We choose the Tugu Bali to celebrate our 25th wedding aniverery. We stayed using the 5 night romance in paradise package.

Words are really hard to come up with to describe the service at this place. It is almost like they know what you need / want and have it prepared before you even think of asking them for it. One morning I needed the internet for some business I needed to take care of (I know, working while in Bali doen't make any sense!). The internet at Tugu Bali was down. Without me even asking, they had their driver come and take me to a local restaurant that had internet service. When the restaurant did not have access, he drove me to another one that did. He than waited while I took care of my work and than returned me to the hotel.

The location of the hotel was wonderful for us. It's location is not for everyone. It is isolated on a very wonderful beach. There is not much around, so if you are looking for night life don't come here. The beach is basically empty except for surfers during the day. At night the local people will come out during low tide to hunt for crabs in the rocks and enjoy the sunset. A ten minute walk up the beach will take you to Echo Beach. Echo Beach is a grouping of several restaurants and a surfers hang out. We really enjoyed the Beach House. At 6:00 every night they set up a beach barbque and for US$5 you can have a plate full of barbqued seafood and all the fixings. We ate there several nights, enjoying the great food while watching the sun set.

The hotel grounds are beautiful. The antiques and history that is being maintained there is wonderful. If you go, take time to walk about and enjoy it all.

The Tugu Bali advertises that you can eat anywhere you like.... and that is true. We had breakfast served to us twice at the beach. They would take an old door made into a table and a bench out to the beach in the morning and set it up. What a great way to start the day.... eating breakfast while watching the waves! We also had dinner at the beach under the stars.

The hotel offers free transportation into Kuta (You have to take a taxi back to the hotel), but once you get settled in at the hotel you won't want to go anywhere else!
