My husband and I ended my 2 week 50th birthday trip to Indonesia with a 3 night stay at Tugu Bali. After a 4 night stay at their sister hotel on Lombok, our expectations were extremely high. We were not disappointed. The same things that made our stay on Lombok special could also be said of this hotel. It was one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had in all of our travels. The location (on a great surfers' beach), hotel (filled with antique museum pieces), and room (overlooking the ocean)were all over the top. But most of all, it was the service and hospitality of all the staff. We were treated very special and it always felt genuine. We chose one of their unique 3 day packages that was called "101 Tastes of the Islands", which included some special dinners, a trip to the food market and a cooking class. Since I was celebrating my actual birthday here, one of the dinners that intrigued me was the Tugudom dining experience, which I chose to do on my birthday. If you want to treat yourself very special and feel like a queen or king for one night, I highly reccommend this. The pomp and circumstance of the food presentation by a multitude of the staff is truly over the top. While dressed in traditional costume (soldiers, dancers, villagers), they give a presentaion with dance and music, then parade you into a beautiful dining room for a private, candlelit dinner. The Tugudom experience tells the story of the Royal expeditions of King Hayam Wuruk of 500 years ago. We were also treated to a private Legong dance by a beautiful balinese dancer. To end it all, they presented me with a wonderful chocolate lava birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday in Balinese! How can I top that for my 51st? (To be honest, the food was good, not spectacular, but who cares? The ceremony made up up for any culinary deficiencies)! The cooking class was another unique experience. You choose the dishes you wish to make, go to the market to provision, have the cooking class, then sit down for a fabulous meal. It was one of the best we had in Bali, even if we did have to work hard for it! (If you do this, the market visit is a must) We also had a romantic candlelit dinner on the beach. One of the amenities that is unique with the Tugu Hotels is being able to dine privately whenever and wherever you wish. It gave my husband and me much needed quality alone time together. We also had a wonderful spa treatment. The rest of the time we spent on the beach watching the many surfers and swimming. It is a great beach for bodysurfing, but you should be a good swimmer. The swells and undertow can be ferocious. Another special touch were the personalized notes we received at check-in, at dinner and every night after turn down service. An added bonus was a delivery of a beautiful flower arrangement on my birthday. From the airport pick-up to our airport drop-off, we were pampered and in luxury. What a great way to spend my birthday!
