“A tranquil, holistic vacation spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2011

Soma Palmshore, an ayurvedic resort is located at walking distance from famous hawah beach of kovalam. At the same time it provides sufficient peaceful environment for tranquilizing experience. Though I was on leisure tour, it is one of the best resort for ayurvedic treatment tour, a must recommended. It contain a private beach, well maintained swimming pool, an ayurvedic store, an handicraft showroom, a regular and a sea food restaurant. Executive, Deluxe and cottage rooms to choose from based on budget. We spent 2 days in mid-december. Received a traditional garland welcome with coconut water . An excellent place for vacation in Kovalam.

The location should be lovely, with steps down to the beach, although it is a steep walk back up the hill from the main beach and cafes. Nice pool.

Our room was OK, but the bathroom had an external air vent where the mosquitos could get in. Apart from that it was clean but looked a bit jaded. The air con was very noisy.

Service in the restaurant where we had lunch was rather slow but the food was good when we got it.

On balance I think there are more convenient places to stay in Kovalam.

I stayed 5 nights at the Palmshore at the end of a South India tour.

The hotel has lots of good features, for example spacious bedrooms with balcony, fan and aircon, hot water shower, cable TV. A swimming pool, direct access to a small pleasant beach, Ayurveda treatments.

On the downside, many of the staff are desperately in need of some customer service training as they do not have a good grasp of how to relate to Western tourists. Small things like dirty tablecloths, cutlery, towels and chipped crockery are off-putting to the Western visitor. Breakfast is very poor, for example there are fruit sellers all over Kovalam selling beautiful pineapples, mangos, bananas, but all that was on offer at breakfast was a dish of rather sad, soggy papaya that looked as though it had been there all night. No butter but some greasy, pale coloured margariny type spread. Meals in the seafood restaurant were very good but access to it at night was precarious with many steps and no handrails and no lighting in places.

My room was cleaned every day but it never looked very clean as it was crying out for a coat of paint in places and some new grouting in the bathroom. It also smelled musty.

The Ayurveda treatment was OK but nothing special.

The hotel is definitely not suitable for anyone with a disability as it is over 5 floors but does not have a lift. There is a further long climb down to the beach and the seafood restaurant. There is also a steep hill down into the town.

Its a wonderful hote, has private access to beach and a good swimming pool, only drawback is that nothing much to do in late evening/night. Most of the guests were foreigners. Hotel was clean, view from room was great, beach was clean and so the water.

We had made a booking in advance but were not sure if it was the best place for our budget.
The room we got was a standalone cottage on the far left, great view & privacy was just what we wanted, costed us 3100 a night which I felt was value for money. They have a private beach which is great, that made the money worthwhile
Kovalam is a great place for food, so we didn't need to eat at Palmshore often, the breakfast was nice but may not be to everyone's taste, the dinner too was good, i.e., above 'average' but not yum...
The bit that really ticked us off was the massage which is what we started our stay with. The doctor walked us through the types of treatments, gave us the benefits of all on the list and let us make our own decision; however, felt some explaining would have helped (especially about the 'medicated steam' - more about this in a bit).
Then started the massage; now maybe we had high hopes when we got here but the massage wasn't really that great, the guy did the foot massage, etc but I felt the massage I get at Ayush in Bangalore is far far better. Then came the 'medicated steam' @ 800 which the guy didnt let me sit in for more than 5 mins, he was constantly checking if I was was done. Steam is for you to sweat right - or was I asking for too much??
So 2 things that got me feeling I made the wrong choice with this hotel - the attitude of the massage guy and the price, I mean 1400 for the massage was bad enough, 800 for the steam was simply a RIP-OFF, overall the massage was an absolute mood killer
However, Kovalam fixed the bad start, the light house, the shacks and everything around was just great, really loved the place.
What I liked was that the front office manager asked us about our experience and when we told him our story, he called the lady who manages the massage centre and assured us he would fix this problem.
Overall, thought we had a bad start , we enjoyed our stay and I would certainly recommend this place for everthing apart from the massage

Had it not been for the food i woudl have surely rated this hotel as excellent. This is the only and in my opinion the major short coming of this hotel. They had a buffet breakfast which consisted of the usual toast, cereal, fruit, fruit juice, tea/coffee and south indian breakfast which is fairly varied but the south indian breakfast was always too oily and on most occassions cold when it was supposed to be served hot, the first night we ate there the food was reasonable. The fourth and fifth night we went down to the restaurant to eat and were told that there wasn't a menu and that the hotel and decided to do a buffet. the food was cold, chappati was brittle, and service was poor.

This is an excellent resort and their ayurveda treatments are equally excellent but they really need to improve on their cooking and serving skills.

We visited the hotel for Ayurvedic treatment combined with beach holidays. The Ayurvedic treatment was very good, the doctor and the treatment people were very nice. For India the treatment rooms were quiet clean, although I never saw any desinfection between different customers. Only water was used for cleaning.
The food was ok, but not very extravagant, for a middle class hotel acceptable.
The service in the reaturant depended on the employees, bur mostly it was very good. The service of the reception people was good, although we sometimes thought they are a little bit nerved to see us again.
The location of the hotel was bad, because although the hotel was a nice place to stay, there is nothing nearby to visit. You have to walk a while until there are shops to get books for example.
The rooms were clean although the bed was equipped with old matresses and pillows and they had an uncomfortable smell. The bed linen was changed every day. There was a little bit of mould in the bathroom, but not too bad. Only cold water.
The sleep quality was ok, although we heard several noises from other people, from animals and from the room service, which finished at night, so you could sleep quiet good.
The hotel offered an airport shuttle, both times the drivers were on time and friendly.
The hotel has security boxes which we used without any problems and there are security people on the property all day and night.
Loss of power everyday, but it was finished within several minutes.
