“A piece of Tianjin's Hotel History”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

I had a chance to stay at this unique property and i was purely trying because a friend mentioned it before during her stay in Tianjin. The hotel seems to be one of the cities first International hotels and does have a good charm to itself.

The famous old elevator from early 20th century is a clear sign of the hotel history, even though unfortunately it is not operatonial anymore... The rooms are ofcourse not the latest style but comfortable and clean and the bed are very comfortable to sleep in.

The spacing in the room is great and the bathroom has all you need... The location is good as it reaches or touches the old Banking street and runs all the way donw to the station is you fancy a nice walk. The famous Astor Hotel is located right around the corner and the convenience of Starbucks or a Shopping mall are not far away.

Dining in the hotel is not great but luckily there are options not far away. If you like a unique stay then this is a good budget hotel with unique features. Worth a try if you are not too picky.

This hotel opened in the late 20' in what was then the British concession. The building is nice and the recent refurbishment preserved the historical character of this place. The old Otis lift installed in 1928 contributes to the charm of the place (don’t worry there is also a brand new one!).

The location in Heping district the central part of Tianjin is fine. Most of the customers are Chinese or Japanese. Very little Westerners. The staff is friendly but cannot speak English at all.

Being an old building, rooms are much larger than usual. They are equipped with air-conditioning, Internet, WIFI. Furniture and decoration are in the original Art Deco style of the 20’ and I found it relatively simple but elegant. Beds are clean and comfortable. Bathrooms are large too. Inside the hotel it is quiet. The price is very reasonable, which makes it a good choice if you can manage the contact with the Chinese speaking staff.

For breakfast, you may prefer something more “Western style” and go to a Starbucks of the neighborhood. There is one on Kaifeng road (开封道), at the crossing with Jianshe road (建设路) that opens at 7:30am on week days and 8:30am on week-ends. It takes 5 minutes to get there. There is another one on Tai’An road (泰安路).

The Astor hotel, also on North Liberation road (解放北路) and very close, opened in 1863 is actually the oldest hotel of Tianjin. On evenings, you might be interested in having a drink in the O’Hara’s bar of the Astor, more typical than the Japanese clubs around the First Hotel.

Very nice welcome at the desk.
The entrance hall reminds of a 20ies style hotel and puts you in that kind of travelling mood. An iron elevator cage supports that image.
The rooms are big and have a canape which invites to read. Bathrooms have a bathtub are big with. Could need some refurbish, though and cleaned more properly.
The hotel's location is in center of town and interesting neighbourhoods are in walking distance. The railway station is in close vicinity as well.
Breakfast is very small compared to other hotels in town.
I enjoyed the stay very much and would stay again at that hotel. I definitely recommend that hotel.

The hotel is in a historic building of Tianjin, from the 20s, it has some kind of charm.
Rooms was big, and comfy, very quiet, but bathroom is aging a bit.
Neighborhood is not so nice, but walking distance from nicer place, and anyway taxis are very cheap.
Didn't test the restaurant downstairs, and service is minimal.
All in all, good value, I would go back.

It was a total pleasure staying here. The 3 star hotel has a staff with a 5 star attitude. This goes from the front desk to management and housekeeping staff. The hotel has been completely renovated. It hosts both a Chinese and Japanese restaurant, both are a good value for the portions and ambiance. It is located close to the government building, shopping, downtown and a 2 minute walk to the riverfront.

The rooms are clean, tidy, large and the bed is comfortable. Internet is available for free if you bring your own cable and cost a small fee if you don't. They have a small business center and store with the essentials available. In typical Chinese hotel fashion, all amenities are provided in the room. They do have a mini bar and is a short walk to the Hisense Plaza mall, which has some decent low priced restaurants in the basement and major designer brands if you are in the mind for shopping.

You can get to all the local attractions for at most 25 RMB by taxi and usually around 15 to 20 RMB. Nightlife is also close by and easy to find. This is a place I would recommend to friends or colleagues for the value and the ambiance. A good place to conduct business and relax on the weekend.

The only thing I would recommend to travelers in Tianjin is that you call ahead to any restaurant, club or bar you find on the web as the city is in flux and as many new places open us as there are places, which close down on a regular basis.

We stayed here on a trip to Tianjin in 2004. The room was overpriced, and a bit old and dingy. In fairness, this is one of the oldest hotels in Tianjin still in operation, and we did also enjoy the hotel’s faded glory, especially the old elevator. The location was also great for tourists - across the street from the Hyatt, near the Astor hotel and all the historic buildings of Jiefang Road. The Chinese breakfast was good. The hotel staff was excellent and helped us book plane tickets. If the rooms were renovated this place would be a real gem!
