On the road...

Petersburg – 3 hours from Wrangell and passing through the narrow Wrangell Straights (cruise ships can’t) you can see the ferry boat’s wake wash up on the nearby shore. Since the cruise ships can’t come here, the town of only 3000, has a more natural, less spoiled feel. 1000 people sure seems to make a difference, as it also seems a bit more civilized, if that’s your thing. You can get fresh fish from several mongers downtown. Tim loved the steep, 4 mile Raven Trail and judging by the pics he took, there were spectacular views of the town and sound. We enjoyed taking the Jeep on the Three Lakes Loop Road. Definitely take the short detour to the view of the LeConte Glacier, where, on a clear day, you can easily make out icebergs. During low tide (free tide books are available at the Visitor’s Center and Wells Fargo Bank in town) head to Blind River Rapids. When the salmon are “in” it’s wall to wall and you might also see bear fishing, but are pretty much guaranteed to see eagles anytime. If a minimum 6 hour boat trips to whale watch isn’t your thing (it wasn’t ours) locals tell us they often see the beasts off shore at Outlook Point in the evenings (there are even binoculars mounted on pedastals for public use). We didn’t see any, but did catch a lovely sunset and a few deer on the beach. Even though P is a bit more upscale than W, there still aren’t any great restaurants. Tim satisfied a burger craving at Northern Lights Restaurant on Sing Lee Alley. The view was lovely, but the food (burgers, fish and chips, etc) was just acceptable. Locals recommend Joan Mei Restaurant (across from the ferry) for Chinese and American food, although there was a “for sale” sign in the window at the time of our visit. P is wired. Take you laptop downtown and take your pic. I found free Wifi at the corner of Dolphin and Nordic and sat in the Jeep checking emails. We stayed at Twin Creek RV Park which has full, (barely) 30 amps hookups for $20/night and is about 6 miles from the ferry terminal on Mitkoff Highway. It is not particularly picturesque and gets 2.5 painted nails, but for buses, there’s not that much to chose from, here. While we enjoyed our time in Petersburg, we both found it the least memorable town on the Alaska Marine Highway, so keep that in mind if you’re pressed for time.

Petersburg is unspoiled in that few tourists come here, cruise ships can't stop because the harbor can't accomodate them (intentionally I think), and there are no chains. "Mom & pop" stores still are all there is on the main street, Nordic Avenue. It's like being in an American town in the '50's. The houses along Hammer Slough and commercial buildings along Sing Lee Alley take you back 100 years. Some of these streets are boardwalks over tidal inlets. A fairly prosperous town based on fishing and canning. Many small Alaska towns have a poor economy, but not this one.

But parking is difficult. The motels have very few spaces and most people have to park on the street where there are many restrictions, apparently not enforced off season. Our stay was lengthened when the state ferry ship that was supposed to pick us up had a generator fire—not the first on that ferry, the Columbia—and couldn't come. The incessant rain was hard to take after four days—or ten days of rain counting Juneau and Haines—and we itched to go somewhere else.

There are many forest roads on Mitkof Island and we toured some of the rain forest. The forest roads are not muddy and fairly easy to drive, but we couldn't see much because of clouds, rain and fog. A unique place, but the rain can make you batty.

Not much in the way of restaurants either and it's best to bring food, get a place with a kitchenette and make your own. We recommend the Scandia and to avoid the Tides Inn if you can. It's worth seeing these little towns along the Inside Passage, but be aware of the drawbacks. The state ferry is the best way to see the Inside Passage and if you can figure out the schedule, you can jump from town to town and bring your car.
