“wonderful views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2012

There are 2 ways up the butte so you have choices. Both are a decent workout with a reward of spectacular views of the Mat-Su Valley from various vantage points. Wait a couple of days after a rain though as the trails are super slippery when they're wet and muddy.

“Amazing View!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012 via mobile

Be ready for a pretty challenging route up the Butte but it is so worth it! The view is unbelievable! Near the end of the hike it does become quite vertical with loose sandy soil but ropes are strung to help you up the climb.

“Short, but steep climb worth the effort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

particular if a clear, sunny day, you can see for miles to the snow covered mountains and all the way up the Knik River

“A hike for most anyone! With Awesome Views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012

The infamous Butte is a "can do" hike for all ages. There are 2 trails the shorter steeper, more strenuous trail on the Southside or the easier, with rest stop benches and stairs on the Northside. The Southside is more visible, but be prepared to go vertical as soon as you leave the parking lot. The Northside parking lot is on a side road off Bodenburg Loop Rd (I believe on Mothershead Rd) maintained by the Borough with pit toilets and a winding gravel trail and stairs leading to the more difficult narrow switchback part of the trail. Even if you don't make it to the top there is a great view at the resting area just before the stairs. There is one difficult traverse over some roots and rocks in an area that is sometimes somewhat muddy, but if you take your time it is an excellent hike. The summitt is approximately 700 ft, and you can see Knik Glacier and the entire Matanuska Valley from here! It is a very popular hike for the locals.
