“Memories of Alaska”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

My brother and i have visited Port Lions lodge the last 5 years. We always catch lots of fish, but this is only part of the attraction. The setting of the lodge is outstanding with post card views in almost every direction. Captain James and Patti make everyone feel like family and Patti is a great cook. My brother and i love to fish and this is the perfect setting. It is away from the crowds found in many parts of Alaska. It is not unusual to spend the day on the water and only see a few other charter boats.and the opportunities to catch fish are limitless. We always catch, salmon, halibut and about every species of bottom fish available including huge LIng Cod. This area is full of like we always see, whales, Orcas, seals, otters, Puffins, Eagles, fox, deer and an occasional bear..I would recommend this lodge to anyone looking forward to some great fishing, camraderie and spending a week with some really good people. It has become the highlight of my Summer.

The port lions lodge was a true fishing adventure. James and Patty made us feel very comfortable. The lodge was very nice, and Patty's cooking was amazing every single day. James' team prepared our catch every day, and the haul of fresh halibut, cod, rock fish and salmon will be great to eat for months to come. I would come back again. It was a wonderful vacation. Thank you port las lodge!

Our family went out for a wonderful excursion to Port Lions Lodge. We caught a lot of halibut and cod. We had a great time being catered by Captain James and his wife Patti, who happens to be the best cook on the island. Port Lions Lodge offers great accommodations with an ocean front beach right off their deck. Simply wonderful.

We spent one week in June 2008 at the Port Lions Lodge on beautiful Kodiak Island Alaska. Steve and Peggy Andresen were warm, wonderful hosts/owners who had a way of making everyone feel like old friends. This full-service lodge is right on the water in a quiet bay, just a short drive and boat ride away from Kodiak City. www.portlionslodge.com

The lodge was very clean and comfortable and the food fantastic! The rooms were small and basic, but cozy with private bath. The view from the common living area was a panorama of water, mountains and snow--gorgeous. The lodge is next to a very long causeway that made for a great after-dinner walk. Peggy had a map of hiking trails if one was so inclined and apparently there is a waterfall where the famous Kodiak Island bears can be seen fishing. We started out one day and saw such fresh bear “sign” that we decided not to chance an up close and personal encounter!

Each day after a 7:00AM home-made breakfast, we boarded the boats (4 per boat plus the guide) that are also owned by the Lodge and headed out for about 9 hours of fishing for halibut and salmon. The scenery was unreal in its beauty; emerald green hills, black sand beaches, forests, waterfalls, and snow-capped mountains. We saw lots of wildlife such as otters, puffins, whales, orcas, foxes and eagles. The boats were clean and roomy with heated cabins. They even had enclosed toilets—a wonderful accommodation especially for women who like to fish! Steve and his hired-hand Brett served as boat captains and guides—they were professional, polite, and very knowledgeable.

A hearty lunch was provided each day on the boat and upon our return, we were treated to scrumptious appetizers before dinner (alcoholic beverages were not provided—we brought our own). Dinners were such a treat with homemade bread; seafood, chicken, or steak entrees (a different one each day); delectable side dishes; and, fresh, homemade desserts. Marvelous!

Our last day of fishing we headed out toward Raspberry Island on a hot tip that the king salmon were biting; we’d caught plenty of halibut so off we went! We had the fishing “ruined” by dozens of orcas who must have also received the same tip. Even as diehard fishermen, we thought it was an enchanting way to end the trip—they were just beautiful.

We all caught fish and took home about 50lbs per person. The Lodge has onsite fish cleaning, packaging and freezing. Steve was kind enough to take our fish to the local processor near the airport to have it shipped home; otherwise you could take it on the airplane in waxed 50lb boxes.

Great people, beautiful scenery, excellent food, and unparalleled fishing! This was our first time at a full-service fishing lodge—we had a terrific experience and highly recommend the Port Lions Lodge.
