We stayed at the Cape Fox for one night following an Inside Passage cruise. The Lodge is very attractive in a lovely setting on a hill above old Ketchikan. The rooms are spacious with good sized bathrooms. Everything was very clean. The restaurant was very good with excellent service. Those are the positives.
The negatives include mattresses and pillows that were not just as old as the hotel but were probably used previously in another hotel -- true back breakers. Rooms facing the mountains overlook the entrance and with staff leaving and being picked up (none too quietly) until well after midnight these rooms should be avoided. Quieter rooms overlooking the water cost more!
Finally, if one is not driving one's own car one needs to use the hotel's cable car to get down to and up from town. The steep walk down is not too bad but coming back up, particularly if you have shopped, is a killer. So why not use the cable car? When we tried to come back up it wasn't working and it had a note on the door "temporarily out of service". So we waited until we were told that "temporarily" usually meant a week or two! Upon getting back to the hotel we were told that we could have taken a taxi -- try finding one that isn't giving tours! The manager we spoke with said she would change the notifications to reflect that the out of service was longer than anticipated and give alternate arrangements for reaching the hotel. The next morning that had not been done. We found out from our cab driver to the airport that the cable car is a local joke. If you have transportation and a strong back you might try it but I would recommend just eating at the restaurant.

The Good:
Had a two-day stay just a few days ago. First of all, the restaurant is great. We had our best Kethikan meals in the Cape Fox restaurant.

The Less-Than-Good:
Espresso shop opens too late. Hey, this is summer in Alaska and people are up and ready to go early!

Biggest problem was that front desk had poor knowledge of tourist-related schedules, especially how often airport ferry ran, start times, etc. Also incorrect/poor knowledge of city bus schedules. We heard excuses that due to construction, bus schedules were changing weekly. So? Get updated schedules so customers can have up-to-date information. Excuses don't cut it with a high-dollar facility that prides itself on taking care of tourists.

Rooms ok (nice view) but mattress was not good (old).

Overall and based on cost, I'd rate the facility average (restaurant = excellemt)

Our room had a lovely view of Ketchikan Creek with the town and Tongass Narrows in the distance. As the salmon began to congregate in the creek below, the eagles would perch on trees right outside our window! The location was perfect, with a tram that carried guests to the tourist streets below. Breakfast in the restaurant was pricey but good.

We first discovered the Cape Fox Lodge while passing through Ketchikan on a Cruise Ship. The staff and restaurant were very nice and we decided to make a return visit and do some fishing the following year.
When we stayed at the hotel we found the staff extremely helpful, the restaurant very good and the rooms themselves more than adequate. We continue to only consider the Cape Fox Lodge on our return trips to Ketchikan. We find the staff continuing the fine tradition of helpfulness with all of our requests.
