“Can't recommend their pilots and this experience enough!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

We flew Promech Air to see the Misty Fjords. The pilots and plane were great!!! The office people were extremely unfriendly, but they were not the main event, so their rudeness was inconsequential! We very much enjoyed the flight, it was breath taking! Alaska is absolutely gorgeous! I felt complete secure with the pilot; and the plane!!!

Seeing the Misty Fjords is something you can't miss when you are in Skagway!

“Bears”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012 via mobile

We also came via an Alaska cruise. A short informative flight and then to the river viewing area. After 15 mins......bears. A mum and cubs then another one putting on a show.as we were making our way back we were surprised to hear thre was a bear less than 20 meters from where we were watching. We walked past it in the bushes at about 5m. Outstanding side trip and worth every penny!

“Misty Fjords Floatplane and Catamaran Tour - Marvellous!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

I don't understand why this brilliant tour isn't Number One of things to do in Ketchikan.
We were advised by friends to book this elective tour well in advance as part of our Holland American Alaskan Inside Passage Cruise.
Our DeHavilland Beaver pilot, Mark, was very personable and full of information, (unlike a different company's pilot out of Juneau). My husband is a pilot as well as being an air-safety specialist, and said that Mark always flew very cautiously. A nervous passenger expressed concerns about flying in such a small aircraft and Mark reassured 'one and all' that as he had already done 350 water take offs and landings that month, (it was the 20th August), that he knew what he was doing...We all felt extremely confident in Marks expert airman-ship.
Delightful pilot Mark took us on the flight of a lifetime, over beautiful wilderness, suspended lakes, magnificent waterfalls, and Misty Fjords.
Flying is definitely the best way to take in the scale and grandeur of this stunningly beautiful part of the world.
After an incredibly smooth landing at the Misty Fjords pontoon dock, we hopped aboard a spacious new catamaran with Jenna, Cole? and the skipper, for a fascinating sea-level 2 hour trip back to Ketchikan. On the voyage home, we saw a Bald Eagle, a whale, and numerous Sea Lions.
Jenna's commentary and knowledge was most engaging and in-depth. The whole crew should be complimented for their outstanding dedication to customer service, and their passion and enthusiasm for the Ketchikan environment.
We learnt more, and saw more, in a couple of hours on our 'Misty Fjords Floatplane and Catamaran Tour' than we could ever imagined possible.

“Misty Fjords Flight-seeing Excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

This Norwegian Jewel shore excursion is currently operated by Promech Air, a local operator of scheduled flights, charters and flightseeing. You'll be picked up at the pier and driven by charter bus to Promech's dock operations. It was raining (which it does most of the time) with a low ceiling (very low clouds) and our driver cautioned that it was possible our flight would be cancelled. Promech sends out scout planes into the fjords each morning to determine overall flight and sightseeing conditions.

After waiting approx. 20 mins, (good time for using restrooms) we received word that weather at the fjords was acceptable and proceeded to the dock with our pilot, who loaded us into a de Havilland floatplane, with seating for six, including the pilot. Be sure to tell the pilot if you're celebrating a special occasion - you might be selected to sit up front next to the pilot.

At this point, conditions were overcast and rain with 54F temperature. The planes are heated. As a matter of fact, ours was overly warm with all the gear we were wearing. Each passenger has their own headset for listening to music and narration during the flight. We saw some incredible scenery and landed on the water in the fjords. We were not invited to step out on the pontoons as advertised, but we did open the doors for a few minutes.

Photography is challenging, especially when shooting through fogged up, rainy windows. That said, we still got some nice photos. If you shoot with a DSLR, manual focus is advisable.I also recommend a cloth to wipe the fog off interior windows during inclement weather. Take some test shots during take-off to determine best shutter/aperture settings. Expect weather conditions to change throughout your flight. I chose a single lens (Tamron 18-270mm) for this trip and it handled everything from waterfalls to wide-angle scenics. Plan for low-light and low contrast conditions.

It stopped raining for a bit while in the fjords, which was a bonus. No wildlife sighted on this flight, but we felt it was still worth the money.

One caution: you'll feel the turbulence in a small plane. If you're prone to motion sickness, I'd recommend finding a different excursion. One of the people on our flight spent most of the flight with her head in a plastic bag.

Our pilot (think his name was Mike) was great and very personable. Very smooth water landings. We'd definitely recommend this excursion and consider it one of the best choices you can make in Ketchikan.

I should also mention that one of the locals mentioned that Promech is one of the better flight services in the area and is known locally to be a safe operator.

Have fun...we certainly did!!!

“Even my teenager was impressed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

What a wonderful experience for the whole family. I'm squeamish and prone to motion sickness but no problems. The sights were breath taking and the pilot and entire staff were great. Don't miss this tour.
