When traveling, we try to avoid the national chain restaurants and look for hidden jewels. Sweet Mermaids is exactly that – and the locals know it.
Our cruise shipped stopped in Ketchikan and we were looking for a mid-morning cup of coffee. We stumbled across Sweet Mermaids. We were quickly seated and ordered coffee that was quickly served in huge cups. The coffee was fantastic – not the over roasted, over heated and over bitter version from Starbucks. It was hot, smooth and delicious.
While relaxing with our coffee, we noticed that most of the patrons knew the owners and staff through their greetings and easy conversations. This clearly indicated that this was a shop that the locals favored. And we were treated just the same. The shop seats about 20 to 25 people.
A few minutes later I heard one of the owners say they had fresh rhubarb pie – it was sumptuous.
So when you are in Ketchikan – go see the totem poles and some of the other sites (personally I would skip the lumberjack show – that’s another upcoming review), BUT leave time to go to ‘Sweet Mermaids’ you’ll be glad. I included a picture of the owners. God bless your day!
