Our group of ten was doing a paddling trip out of Ketchikan and we were looking for ways to save money and settled on this hostel to keep the housing costs down before and after the trip. The pictures online looked okay and via email Dale, the owner, seemed ok to deal with (perhaps the sporadic typing in ALL CAPS should have told me something. But once we arrived in Ketchikan and arrived at the Eagle's View we were sorely disappointed. first the location is convenient to nothing. while you might have a view, the walk up the extremely steep hill to get to the hostel and back and forth to town quickly becomes exasperating and exhausting. Dale's customer service skills leave alot to be desired. He's quite grumpy and acts toward you like he's doing you a big favor by renting you a room for the night rather than you're a paying customer. He overbooked the place on one night and grumpily exclaimed "well, there's a cot in there and someone can sleep on the couch". The living situation leaves something to be desired as well. Typically I think of a hostel arrangement being that there is a caretaker on premises who has a living quarters totally removed from the guests. well, at Dale's (as we not-so-fondly came to think of it) the hostel living space is the same as Dale's space; he just has a bedroom right next door to your room. so you see Dale in the morning, you see him in the evening... the rooms themselves are spartan at best. while he is a stickler for washing the sheets and towels this has resulted in sheets that are threadbare and towels that seem like large bandanas. New sheets and towels would be a plus here. This enthusiasm for clean sheets does not carrying over to the cleanliness of the rooms- vacuuming seemed unheard of and the bathroom was grimey. But probably the worst aspect of this place was just Dale's attitude towards his guests. After comments like "if they didnt like it I'd tell them to get the hell outta here" we didnt feel so welcome or that we could speak up about being overbooked because we worried about being thrown out ourselves.
All in all while the price looks good for this spot I'd say try the other hostel in town or pony up the bucks for a hotel!
