My brother and I went on this tour on Sept 16, 2007 and apparently the tour had only been running for a few weeks and was brand new at this time. However you would not have known it since the staff was very professional and were extremely experienced, having been crab fishermen in the Bering sea for many years. I came to hear about the Aleutian Ballad from the Discovery Channel show Deadliest Catch, and was pretty excited to actually be able to get on the same boat for a few hours with the owner and some of his very experienced crew. I was surprised to see how nicely the boat had been outfitted with stadium seating, heaters, etc...for the comfort of its passengers and yet still had the rigging and equipment for pulling crab and other types of pots from the deep ocean. The tour lasted around four hours and sailed around the calm waters around the inner waterways around Ketchikan. We saw probably 20-30 killer whales (Orca), eagles, and lots of sea life. The pots we pulled up had king crab, dungeness crab, shark, cod, octopus, starfish, and various other forms of sea life. The crew then brought all of these around for everyone to touch or hold and held them in the live well on deck. The crew also gave account of their many experiences as crab fishermen in the Bering sea and how they got started in the commercial fishing business....very interesting stories! After having been to Alaska several times, I can truly say this was one of the most fun "day trips" I've ever taken there. The abundance of wildlife for me was one of the reasons for going to Alaska in the first place, and this trip was absolutely full of it from start to finish (perhaps this was just the perfect time of year, I dont know...). If you're a fan of "The Deadliest Catch", and then again even if you've never even seen it before, I would recommend this without reservation. Absolutely fantastic time!!!
