“Crown Jewel of Juneau”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

Well, cool old historical building in desperate need of renovation. Lobby, bar, restaurant all musty, worn out and gloomy. Our room was pretty much the same, a bit on the dirty side with leftover coffee in the coffee pot that looked many days old. Folks that ate in the restaurant said that the service was very slow, food was ok. This is really the only downtown hotel and supposedly the "Crown Jewel". The property is just begging for some investors to swoop in and reclaim what must have been an awesome place back in the day.

Room Tip: Check out the room first, try to get something on the top floor for views.

As the locals will tell you, the Baranof is the grandest hotel in Juneau. Of course, everything is relative. There is not a lot of competition for "grand" in Juneau. Most travelers will find the Baranof well past its prime, but the future may be bright. The hotel is undergoing a bit of renovation, an undertaking that is not quite as ambitious as it might be. A Starbucks will soon be open in the lobby. Would that were all it will take to make the Baranof one of the traveler's joys in this exquisitely beautiful part of the world.

The Baranof is very nicely located. If you don't know Juneau, staying at the Baranof will put you in a central location, within walking distance of all the shops and cafes and other attractions of town. Rooms are well-sized. A few are like apartments with functional kitchens and separate sitting rooms. Even the more traditional solo rooms are good sized with comfortable mattresses. Everything is impeccably clean, but worn and shabby.

But services are very uneven. Too many of the staff seem to regard the guests as a burden to the business, and too often the interactions with guests and reactions to normal guest needs and concerns are grudging and sullen. Check-in processes can be unnecessarily slow and cumbersome because too many front of the house staff are unwilling to extend flexibility or variability to meet individual circumstances.

The Capital Cafe on the first floor does very nice and affordable traditional breakfast. The Gold Room restaurant is very much a ghost town with a pricey gourmet menu and only a table or two filled most nights. The bar can be lively or comforting depending on the time of day and the quality of the guest musicians.

I wish the Baranof were better but the demand and pressure from the marketplace allows is to coast on its laurels and location. Even so, the visitor to the Baranof will be safe, centrally located, and enjoy clean rooms and good food. Considering that Juneau is almost literally at the end of the road, the Baranof is a good choice, but a long way from what it could be.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with kitchen.

We stayed in Room 312 for 3 nights. We were unable to change rooms as the hotel was full. Our last night being a Saturday night was the very worst. Party going on in the streets. Police siren etc. The breakfast was very good as were the staff in the cafe. Apart from the noise which we rate as extremely important the hotel was passable in all other aspects.

This hotel is well located but very old fashioned, noisy and not at a level expected for this kind of standard. Even the restaurant, where the menu seemed interesting, was sad and we didn't give a chance to try it... The breakfast saved finally the stay with a very smart team.

This hotel has different rates for different floors. If you want to pay the lower rate, you are on the 2nd floor. Ask for an outside room - the inside rooms look out onto the roof. Industrial looking. Plus the windows are accessible from anyone on the roof.
Also, they sold us tickets on a Monday for the tram up Mt. Roberts but failed to tell us the tram doesn't open until noon on Mondays.

I know it is remote but it also isn't 1970. Really could do with an update, but based off trip advisor photos it is not the only place in need of some work. Service wasn't awesome either.

Close to everything down town.

Restaurant at least looked ok with things like Alaskan crab risotto.

Bathrooms have historic charm, yet are clean and updated. Kitchens need major overhaul...old, old, old. Beds are nice. Carpet is dark, so you can see dust in corners and along baseboards where vacuums can't reach.
