“Whale watching tour was incredible!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2015 NEW

Absolutely wonderful experience with near perfect weather. We got to see killer whales, which is a rare sighting in Juneau waters. Best of all, we saw a pod of humpback whales bubble feeding! Awesome watching the humpbacks; even saw a few whales breach. It was a small tour group so the guide was very accommodating to what we wanted to see. He spent a good amount of time near the killer whale pod before zipping away towards a reported humpback pod. I was amazed with how long we spent watching the bubble feeding and really appreciate the time the guide allotted us. You cannot miss an opportunity like this!!

“Whale watching tour & Gold Creek salmon bake”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2014

We traveled for about 30 minutes to get to a spot to watch whales. Our boat was one of three there. The other two had their engines off and the whales were close to those boats. Our boat continuously ran it's engine and we were so far from any whales that even with a 10x zoom we could barely view them. We asked for the engine to be turned off and were told it didn't matter to the whales. I think it did though. The narration on the way to the tour was muffled and along with the constant rattle of the roof in the boat we heard next to nothing. We told the naturalist but nothing changed despite our complaints. Despite seeing "bits" of a few whales the guide immediately told us we wouldn't be getting a refund. Very tacky. I think he knew people were disappointed and want to ward off any complaints or requests for money back. I would avoid this tour unless you're willing to pay a lot of money and get little in return.

The salmon bake at Gold Creek was very nice although the salmon apparently isn't fresh- it's frozen. It was also dry from overcooking. They are organized and provide a nice buffet of food. They have heaters and cover over top the tables to keep leaves and rain off of guests.

“Cold water experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2014

Booked the white water rafting trip through HAL's Amsterdam Excursion desk. Interesting drive to the lake, just below the beautiful Mendenhall Glacier. Overcast, slight drizzle, but we were warm in our boots, coveralls and lifejacket they provided. Piddled around too much in the lake, but did enjoy the scenery, waterfall and eagles. Then it was down the river. Initial stretch was comfortable, passing by homes right on the bank. Saw more eagles, a very large beaver, and lots of beautiful trees. Others complained about the homes on the lower stretch of the river, but they were unobtrusive. One class three rapid proved to me you can't save yourself from getting wet if you put up your hands in front of your face. I only wish I hadn't forgotten that my camera was waterproof, would have been a great shot.Their cameras were broke so no one was on the bridge to take your picture. Warm cider. smoked salmon spread and reindeer sausage was a welcome treat at the end of the tour.

“3 in 1 of Juneau's Best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2014

It was raining so we took a shuttle from the ship to the meeting place at the base of the tramway. We were split into groups to go to one of the 3 locations at different times. Our group went to the glacier first, and had about 1 1/4 hrs there. It was enough time to tour the visitor ctr and take photos nearby, but not quite enough time to walk to the falls and back (about 40 min). If it wasn't raining, would have liked more time there. Then we were taken to the whale watching boat, which we had to wait about 15-20 min for, but the guide assured us that if we saw whales the captain would give us a little more time too. We saw a black bear while we were waiting, was well as bald eagles. The boat trip was great, enclosed boat, but w/an outside back deck to get photos too, clean bathroom but best to visit the latter when the boat is NOT moving...lol. Saw lots of whales, sea lions, and dolphins. Then we were taken to the Salmon Bake...the food was nothing special, but not bad, just a buffet w/standard fare. Salmon was cooked over an open fire. Beautiful setting, tents if it rains, heaters if it's cold, employees dressed in period costumes, but not acting in character. Then you could return to the ship whenever you wanted via a shuttle. Our guide for everything, "Utah," was very nice and informative. Would recommend this trip again for all ages, especially nice to hit 3 things in one tour.

“Good whale watching trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2014

Booked through our Princess cruise, this was a good trip. Even in the continual rain, we saw five adults and one calf. Randy and Savannah did a nice job of explaining everything that was going on. Only downside was the boat was a little smaller, making it a little rougher ride.
