We chose this Mendenhall Glacier, Whale Watching, and Salmon Bake excursion because of the short time we had in Juneau and felt this would give us the most for our time and money. We were correct. The Trip to the Glacier visitor center was short but plenty enough time to see what was there, take a ton of photos, and satisfy our curiosity. We are from Seattle and have seen many glaciers before on Mt Rainier, but this one, obviously was different. Mt Rainier doesn't exactly have a great many glaciers that end up calving into the open ocean. We had Partial blue sky and the accompanying bright sunshine which was appreciated.
We were surprised to see how the boat captain was able to reposition the boat in order to obtain the best viewing possible without disturbing the view of other boats. In Washington State that is illegal. If you see a whale you are not allowed by law to change course to obtain a better view of the whale, so this was quite nice, and as a result we did see better views than we get in the San Juan Island areas North of Seattle's Puget Sound.
The people on the boat we took were very nice. They were very knowledgeable and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. On the way back to the docks, because of the Partial blue skies, we were able to see a good view of the Mendenhall Glacier. We had visited that glacier before the whale watching tour, and it was nice to see it from the open ocean view on the boat. The crew onboard said they didn't get to see that sight very often because they don't really have that many sunny days up there. At least not with the visibility that we had that day. Very enjoyable excursion.
