I just returned from a business trip to Juneau and got a tip from a local business person on the best salmon in town. I had the good fortune of dining at "Thane Ore House" for lunch and just couldn't help myself, I had to return later that same day for dinner! Thane has a quirky, funky, back-woods atmosphere - when you first see it, you may have second thoughts about approaching, but enter you must - just don't wear a suit and tie like I did! This is a place the cruise ships won't tell you about and it stands in stark contrast to the many tourist-oriented eaterys in downtown. It is located approx. 2 - 3 miles outside of downtown. From the airport, drive toward downtown and right through it, stay on the main road and you will see it on the right after about 2 - 3 miles. Just when you think you've driven to far, it will appear in the woods on your right. Dont expect white table cloths, fine china and foie gras - go to Boulevard in San Francisco for that. Expect amazingly fresh salmon, halibut, ribs and baked beans on paper plates and a very uniquely Alaskan experience. This is comfort food and you will leave satisfied and thankful for your good fortune! This could well be the best salmon you have ever eaten! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!!
