“Great Excursion and Awesome Guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

We went on the Photo Excursion during our Alaskan Cruise and could not have been more pleased with the entire experience! Our Guide Dave was amazing and talented and walked us all thru how to get the best pictures. During the ride to the Whale portion he helped us each get our Cameras setup which included all levels of cameras and skills! He was able to look at our cameras and teach us tricks and tips for getting the best possible shots with the equipment we had!

“An amazing adventure.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Our experience with this company was on a shore excursion from a Norwegian Line Alaskan cruise (which was great, incidentally). It was billed as a hike to the Mendenhall Glacier starting from a park outside of Juneau. This was in September, so it was chilly, but not terribly so, and the trees were lovely to see.

This is not a hike for people not in good shape. The literature says it is a 4-6 mile hike, but it doesn't really describe the steepness of the ascent up the mountain or the roughness of parts of the trail. We're pretty old, but thought ourselves in good enough condition to do that, and we were, but we were pretty pushed. Younger people used to walking would have no trouble.

We learned a great deal about the area and particularly the plant life we saw. On the way down, the scenery was heart-achingly beautiful, and the views of the glacier were stunning. The guide gave us ample opportunity to take pictures while, at the same time, moving us along so that we kept to schedule.

I want to go out of the way to single out our guide, Jenny, for an outstanding job of educating us, of pacing the hike with sensitivity to the abilities of all of us, and just for being a charming young person that we grew to know (as best possible) in the several hours we were with her. I can't imagine anyone more knowledgable or competent for the task.

This is the kind of thing that sticks in the memory forever, really. We were pushed hard physically, challenged mentally, and learned a lot about ourselves and the rest of the people on the hike. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and would certainly recommend this company if Jenny is typical of their guides.

“The Highlight of our Alaskan Cruise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

We booked a Juneau photo safari tour the last week of September. We were delighted with our experienced guide and photo expert, Hugh Carey. He was absolutely amazing!! Hugh was extremely patient with the entire group, and was full of history, wildlife knowledge and interesting facts on the rainforest, unique plants, whalewatching, and photography. We did not realize that we had booked a photo safari excursion, What a treat! Hugh was an excellent photographer, and shared his knowledge of the different camera features with each member of the tour. (My husband learned how to shoot amazing photos in a matter of minutes and WOW his friends at home.) To be honest, my husband, who had his camera for several years, was overwhelmed by the many features. Hugh was able to simplify things for him and give him an appreciation of the camera. Thank you Hugh! We found you to be an amazing young man with extreme patience with us old folks. We would highly recommend this tour group, and this wonderful tour guide to anyone. And whales ... did we see whales!!!! With the help of Hugh, we were able to shoot some amazing shots of these beautiful creatures!!! Thanks again for a wonderful time!!! We will definitely be back!!!

“The best of the best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

The philosophy of Gastineau Guiding as I understand it is to get people out and get a little exercise as they see Alaska.
They have several different kinds of advents from whale watching to kayak trips.

The Photo Safari is really great as the nature of the adventure is to help guests learn more about their camera as they learn about the natural history of the area.
The Photo Safari is in two parts: Either the beginning will be a tour of Juneau, a hike to the mendenhall Glacier and then a trip on a very fast boat to hopefully find humpback whales.
the skipper and your tour leader will help to get you to the b set places to photography marine mammals and to advise you as the opportunities arise.

there is usually a bit of communications between other boats on the water to help find the whales.

This outing is one of the best you can get in alaskan off boat adventures. You will get a really great look at Juneau and some of the highlights of the city, a great slide show on the highway to help you improve your photography while you get a really nice trip from your ship to the glacier hike.
The hike is just a little over a mile and not aggressive at all.
Your guide will talk about the flora and fauna and maybe you will be lucky to see a porcupine or a bear. The bears at the glacier are very, very acclimated to visitors and probably not b e a problem (your guide dies carry bear repellant if needed)

“Looking at reviews I am disappointed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

I read all the reviews and was so looking forward to our trip, the morming was very wet, (not their fault) we did the walk to the glacier, but only viewed it from over the lake, some information about the trees etc. We didnt have any tips on pic taking, just taken to the boat in the afternoon, and taken out to see whales, unfortunately there werent doing much, we were told in the morning they had been breaching, unlucky we had the wrong time of day. We saw a few seals, but nothing else was mentioned, I was quite upset, and now find out the mornings are always best so felt we paid a lot with not much hope of good views. I wish we had been advised to do the trip in reverse by the cruise company.
