We were in Juneau via cruise ship and kayaked Mendenhall Lake on 5/20/2013, 4 hour (ish) tour booked through the Above and Beyond AK website. Our guide, Matt, picked us up on time and gave a great impromptu tour with sights & regional info while we were driving to the rental station to pick up our gear. We thought there would be more people on the kayak tour with us...nope just us! Matt went over all the gear, safety speech, etc., and even though we've been kayaking before, made sure we were comfortable with our gear and gave us the approximate time he'd be back to pick us up before he set us free on the lake. He also gave us his phone number in case of emergency. While we kayaked, we saw 2 other kayakers and a longboat with about 10 people in it. THAT WAS IT!!! It was like our own private lake for the day! We kayaked up to the glacier, we were careful not to get too close in case it calved (it didn't!), and just sat in awe for a bit. Seriously, it doesn't do it justice to say it's breathtaking, it something you HAVE to see for yourselves. To all those people who are like, "Oh, I'll just go to the Visitor's Center and see it from there, it's cheaper,"; NO!!!! Do NOT go there, unless you have a physical condition that keeps you from kayaking, then by all means, go there. From where we were sitting in the kayak, the people at the Visitor's Center were the size of ants, and even the ones that hiked over to the waterfall weren't able to get as close as we did to it. You get to see up close and personal the glacier and also the ice that has broken off and is floating in the lake...you seriously would think that icebergs wouldn't be that interesting, but they were! Some even had birds roosting on them! We kayaked back to shore and within 15 minutes of us getting settled in and eating our snacks (they provided us with a snack bag of bottled water, granola bars, fruit snacks, and some fun size chocolates!!!) Matt was there dropping another set of kayakers, so the timing was perfect. We went back to the rental station, unloaded the gear, got another impromptu tour with info, and were dropped back off in Juneau where we were picked up. This tour is so worth it, and I can't say enough about it. When we got back on the ship and people saw the pictures, they said things like "Oh I wish we'd had done that instead of...". Take this tour, you will NOT be disappointed!
