If you are going on a cruise keep in mind that Icy Strait point is a tender port and that you will have to go from your ship to a small boat and then to shore. This will take extra time, so plan accordingly and get ready to leave on the 1st or 2nd boat to be right on time to meet a FISHES representative on shore.
I booked with them and had a great experience. I met them on shore at the parking lot ( I got directions from them in an e-mail). I was a few minutes late but they were there waiting for me even though the other cruisers were there long before me. The lady from FISHES took us to Hoonah (15 min. away) to board the Silver Spoon. It is a small boat that holds 6 people, it has a bathroom and coffee, hot chocolate and cookies are available (free). It was a very cold day luckily the boat that an oven (or something like that) and we managed to stay warm inside.
The guide was very knowledable about the area, you can tell he is really passionate about his bussiness and has great customer service. He kept an eye on the whales and bears, talked about the area, shared his experiences on the sea, and made our trip very informative. Unfortunately we did not see any bears, but we got to see some whales. He communicated with other captains and took us to places where whales were seen. He also threw his sonar in attemp to hear the whales but the whales did not cooperate and we could not hear much.
The tour lasted like 3 hours I remember, close to the end, feeling tired and cold but he as the great guide he is, kept taking us to different places to see the whales: "There is one there, lets go" " There are more over there" "Look to your right". We saw the cruise tour in a very big boat and with probably 100 people in there. Later on, we had the chance to speak with some of the passengers of the cruise tour and they were not happy about their trip, they saw probably only 1 whale and the captain took them to rough waters. In our case at any moment we were in rough waters on the contrary I felt very safe in the small boat knowing that the captain is a native of Hoonah and knows the area.
It was a very good trip. At the end he asked us if we wanted to stay in Hoonah or go back to Icy Strait, we decided to go to Icy Strait and his wife took us back there. Overall, we had a great trip with FISHES.
