“An excellent Hotel to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

My gratitude goes out to Doug and Sue for making our few days in Homer, AK very enjoyable. The room was very clean, the bed was most comfortable, the hot-tub was a blast, the setting was fabulous, and our hosts were most gracious. My wife and I recommend the Alaska Beach house to anyone who wants to relax, enjoy the views, and be in the company of Hotel owners that really care about their customer experience. We will be back to Homer someday and we know exactly where we'll be staying. This was our first time to Homer so we had no idea what to expect and given the options of all the hotels and B&B's in Homer, we know we made the right choice after seeing all the other hotels and B&B's there. Sometimes, you just get lucky and we did indeed.

Room Tip: I don't think there are any bad rooms

The views are amazing, and that is why we chose the Alaska Beach House. The location is gorgeous and we got to watch bald eagles hunting sea gulls on the beach. We found Doug and Sue to be very cool and enjoyed that we felt a lot of privacy while here. The rooms were comfortable and the grounds were very nice. The breakfasts are a little small compared to other places I've stayed, but I knew that before-hand. I would recommend staying here if you go to Homer.

Took my honey for our 20th Anniversary get away to Homer. Like most men I planned this last minute and found out that everyone was booked. I got a lead on a last minute cancellation @ the Alaskan Beach House and jumped at the good fortune. I personal was not wanting to stay in a Bed n Breakfast, but that is what my honey wanted to do.

I rented the cottage on the bluff that is detached from the rest of the rooms. It over looks the Homer Spit and the Ocean. We had excellent weather and were able to walk the beach on low tide. My wife's expression at the site of the inside of the room reminded me of my young daughter at Christmas. Needless to say I scored 100%+ on this room and location.

The host Sue and Doug were wonderful. They had the outdoor wood fired hot tub ready for us when we arrived. Sue had put a vase of roses and nice large piece of chocolate Cheese cake in our room for that extra special touch. The rooms were adorned with an fishing/sea theme that I would expect to find in some east coast Massachusetts fishing town.

The bed appeared to be a California King, and was VERY comfortable. They had a nice deck that you could sit on and watch the ocean and beach. It was so nice to hear the waves roll in while drifting off to sleep. Bathroom was very roomy and we had our own mini kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave. We had dishes and utensils, even had a cork screw for the wine we bought at the local winery.

I would 100% recommend Alaska Beach House to friends and visitors a like. My experience has opened me up to trying another Bed and Breakfast in the future. I only hope it will be as nice as this one!

Sincerely,

Chris Brandt

My wife and I spent 2 nights in the Compass Rose Beach house which sits on stilts on the edge of cliffs overlooking Kachemak Bay. This separate cabin is excellent and well worth the money. The nautical decor is perfect. There's a widescreen TV, but you'll hardly ever use it since the views from your private deck of mountains across the bay are so stunning you won't have time to watch TV. You can even see Homer Spit from the deck, although it's too far to walk to in my opinion. The Spit is a bit touristy, but there are some decent restaurants, great vistas, and lots of bald eagles. We were celebrating our anniversary, and Doug and Sue made it a very special visit. It's nice to walk the beach at low tide---it's secluded and beautiful especially when the sun is out. Bald eagles are everywhere in Homer. Watch for them in the big tree right next to the deck.

The owners are considering selling the place and retiring, so you may have new owners next year. This is one of the prettiest B&Bs we've ever stayed at, and we would definitely stay there again if we get back to Homer. By all means, stay here.....you won't be disappointed. This place is top shelf all the way.

This place is amazing. Ocean views, Bald Eagles, nautical decor.. The rooms each have their own theme and they are supplied daily with everything you would want for a quick breakfast, including a full size coffee maker. Doug and Sue are gracious hosts and make you feel like family! We stayed 4 nights in July and then drove to Seward. We wished we had spent our whole trip in Homer!

Incredible! We stayed in the Kachemak room and my in-laws stayed in Captain's Quarters. We spent our days in Homer halibut fishing, exploring the eclectic town, hiking, and sitting in Doug's awesome hot tub. It is an "old school" hot tub that is heated with a fire. When you are sitting in it there is usually a Bald Eagle perched above you as you gaze over the Homer Spit. We had a Keurig in our room so we enjoyed different coffees and teas at all hours of the day. It was our first anniversary and there was a special cheesecake in our room that we enjoyed very much, along with all of the other delicious baked goods that were baked daily. Doug was so hospitable and told us many stories of adventure, animals, and life in Homer. We still talk about his hike with his daughter where they were dodging bears and scaling cliffs. I highly recommend the Alaska Beach House. It is a true Alaskan experience.

Room Tip: The Kachemak room has a jet tub, Keurig machine, reclining sofa, and above all an amazing view with...

We spent two nights in the Compass Rose Quarters. This is a stand alone structure that is built on the bluffs overlooking the beach and Kachemak Bay. It is about 20-30 feet from the main building. There is a seaside balcony with amazing views of the Spit, bay, and ice-covered mountains. The Quarters has a comfortable king bed. There are two very comfortable recliners in the sitting area. From your bed or recliners, you can look at the scenery from the sliding glass doors or windows. There also is a small table next to the seaside windows to enjoy breakfast with a view. Speaking of breakfast, Doug and Sue provided slices of delicious, homemade carrot cake slices and pumpkin bread to enjoy for breakfast. Yogurt, fresh fruit, orange juice, and packets of hot chocolate, tea, and oatmeal were also provided. There is also a Koenig coffee maker stocked with gourmet coffee. There is a small fridge and mircrowave.
We loved the construction and furnishings in the Quarters. The building has high ceiling with exposed trusses. There is a round window on the upper south side of the building and an octagonal window high on the north side. With exception of these windows there are blinds or shades for the windows and sliding glass door. SInce the two upper windows are located high on the walls and on the north and south side, there amount of light coming in during dusk was not a major issue. The Quarters has a large shower. A hair dryer is also provided. As is the custom in most Alaskan B&B's, you are asked to remove your shoes before stepping on the carpets. There is a hot tub, but we did not use it. Doug and Sue's granddaughters were using it when we arrived, and seemed to be enjoying it immensely.

The balcony is amazing. It is cantilevered from the structure and overlooks the beach below. While on the balconies, numerous eagles flew over our heads and nearby over the water. Doug and Sue are great hosts and can provide good information about activitiies in Homer. We stayed for two nights, but I wish we had stayed at least three.

Room Tip: If it can fit your budget, stay in the Compass Rose Quarters.
