To begin with a side note I want to say that our visit to Denali Park (with a 4-5 hour Tundra Wilderness Tour) was a great disappointment. Having traveled all over the rest of mainland Alaska, I should say that both wildlife and scenic nature is nothing but worthless there. At least, that is for the first 30 miles of the park!!! The Tundra tour is highly overprized, whereas we believe they knew very well we would not be seeing anything there! You'd better take the bus all the way to the end of the park and do it without the nonsense explanation of the official tourguide. Now back to the hotel, if you still believe that it's worth going there and being irritated by the 100's of cruise busses (it's an awful place if you go for tranquil environments... if so, go to Wrangell-St.Elias Park!!!). The EarthSong Lodge is beautifully maintained and is situated about 20 minutes by car from the park entrance. Good thing about it is that it's very dark there, so you'll have a fantastic view for the Northern Lights! The owners of the place are very nice (although we only met the guy) and are very hospitable. In the morning John showed us his 20+ dogs and explained all about them. Too bad that we had to leave after just one night, because this location would be perfect for 2 or more nights, so that you can enjoy the place fully! Accommodation near Denali Park is never cheap. Also this lodge (with two small bedrooms) was quite expensive compared to the rest of Alaska (150+), but seems to be a good price anyhow. I will go back there if I decide to visit Denali again, certainly knowing that the hotels near the park entrance are swamped with cruise ship tourist.
