“Beautiful location and Inn, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2014

There are many positives about this place. First, the location is beautiful. The lake is gorgeous. The rooms are clean, and the staff is nice.

However, the Inn is 15 to 20 minute drive from the Denali National forest entrance. Healy is pretty small town, so there are very few choices of food, and prices are high. The Inn's internet is so slow and inconsistent that it doesn't really support any real applications. So I couldn't work online from the Inn. I had to rely on my 3G service from Verizon Wireless for anything. The rooms were very cramped. We had two beds, so there was practically no room to walk. Our room was on the "bottom floor", and to get there from the main entrance, you have to go a flight of stairs without shoes. The whole "1st floor" is carpeted, and so are the stairs. Needless to say, my wife slipped and tumbled down those stairs. Luckily, she was not hurt. However, those stairs are dangerous. Other than that, a nice inn.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the lake. Note that the bottom floor rooms require stairs, while top floo...

After a lot of reading and reviewing, my husband and I stayed at this B & B for two nights while we explored Denali on May 19th and 20th. I am so glad we chose this place... The breakfast was pretty simple that they placed in your room (cereals, juices, muffin and cinnamon bread and fruit) but the quiet environment and the views plus clean rooms (even if outdated decor) were wonderful! I would definitely recommend folks to stay here and I would return in a heartbeat! It was one of our top favorite finds in Alaska!

What a view. We would fly back just for that bed. Better than expected breakfast. We stayed after Denali Park, about 45 minutes away. We went into "the canyon" for "dinner" not much open yet except for gift stores. We slept in and then went to Husky homestead.

What a cute little B&B in Healy! We spent one night here during our visit to Denali National Park but wish we could have stayed longer. Our room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The decor is a little dated but the beautiful view of the lake and mountains makes up for any shortcomings. It also would have been nice to have blackout curtains in the room for the long summer nights. Breakfast was adequate. We had two apples, two oranges, two small cans of juice, cinnamon raisin bread, milk, a large muffin to share, and several small boxes of cereal. There is also a coffee maker in the room. Great place that is convenient to the park, and we hope we will have another opportunity to stay there!

Discovering this place was the highlight of our visit to Alaska. It has so much going for it - incredible view, clean, spacious, tastefully decorated rooms, very comfortable beds. It's favorably situated to watch the Northern Lights from your balcony. For the price - $90 a night in late March - it's a supreme bargain.

So what's not to like? The Internet, for one thing. It had an annoying habit of knocking you off line every five minutes or so and requiring you to sign in again. I'm sure if they checked their logs, they'd find I logged on about 40 times over the space of three hours; once should have sufficed. I tried multiple devices and encountered the same problem. The signal strength for the wireless was strong, so distance wasn't the problem. Then abruptly it stopped allowing me to sign on altogether. And because there's no one on duty in the evening, there's no way to get the problem fixed.

Hot water capacity is another. There's sufficient for one person to shower, then you wait 30 or so minutes for the water to warm for a second person to shower.

And the third is a problem for those who, like myself, came to photograph the Northern Lights, and for others who came to watch. The rooms are wonderfully situated, but the curtains/drapes/blinds allow light from the rooms to spill out into the viewing area. In addition, while we were there, a group of tourists from Taiwan who came to watch and photograph the Northern Lights were walking around with flashlights, ruining several exposures. I've got some suggestions for this third issue below.

Finally, the breakfast was adequate, but the coffee canister was empty. Just a reminder to housekeeping - check everything.

Suggestion:
1) For guests during the darker months, put in each room a flyer of Northern Lights viewing etiquette. No flashlights on the aurora side of the inn. Keep room lights off after 9 p.m., or have blinds and curtains fully closed.
2) Black out drapes or blinds for all rooms, along with the above.

Don't let my negatives keep you from staying at this place. Those are all fixable, and I'm confident the proprietors will be responsive. It's a wonderful place overall.

Room Tip: If you want to see the Northern Lights, go for the top floor.

The second time we stayed at Denali Lakeview Inn was as good as the first. We have fallen in love with Alaska and can't get enough of it. Denali National Park calls us back again and again. Staying in Healy has been great - it's not far from the park and very convenient. Both times we have been there in September when the fall colours have been at their peak and the view from our room has been spectacular. We stayed the first time in the Blue Moose Room (2006) and the last visit (2013) was the Midnight Sun room. Both rooms are very comfortable with nice decor and we haven't had any reason for complaint. We found the staff friendly and helpful. This last visit I discovered there is a washing machine & dryer, so it was really handy to be able to get our laundry done on the premises. We had access to the internet in our room this visit, which was great for keeping in touch with family in Australia. Both times we have been there we have seen moose in abundance - we almost ran over one when exiting the car park early one morning. Grizzly bears have been seen around Otto Lake but we didn't get to see them unfortunately. Maybe next time - I certainly hope there will be a next time!

My husband and I had an amazing stay here in September 2013. The bed was extremely comfortable. We had a whirlpool tub that was perfect after a long day of hiking in Denali National Park. Our own private entrance led right down to the lake and a breathtaking view of Mt. Healy. We would definitely stay here again. Our only complaint was not enough protein in the breakfasts. Hard boiled eggs or some heatable bacon/sausage would have been a nice complement to all the carbs.

Great place to stay in the Denali National park area!
