“The "height" of Alaskan comfort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

Whether passing through Haines, or seeking a relaxing getaway, the Cliffhanger will not disappoint. This unique property boasts a commanding view of southeast Alaska that you will enjoy in well-appointed comfort. The custom-built home is nestled high among mountainous terrain, but remains easily accessible by passenger vehicle in summer months. During my winter stay, the proprietress, Sue, offered shuttle service both to and from the destination in her personal vehicle, but advanced planning would have been prudent. Each guest room and the common areas are modern, yet provide a warmth that commercial properties do not have. The master suite includes a custom shower that runs amply hot. An outdoor hot tub on the wrap-around deck is also available for your enjoyment, though I did not soak during my stay. You will be prepared a fine breakfast from scratch; mine was photo quality French toast and scrambled eggs. Cliffhanger's environment is pleasantly casual and dog friendly. To be sure, its resident four-legged help will warmly greet you. If you are fussy about any of the aforementioned, a chain hotel may better serve your needs. However, as a born-and-raised Alaskan, I believe the Cliffhanger will provide a uniquely 'Alaskan' experience with a few creature comforts.

Room Tip: Both rooms are fantastic, However, the master suite has its private bath accessible from within the...

A great B&B experience--the house is aptly named, perched on a steep mountain side with a remarkable, unprecedented view--from the great room, as well as from a spacious deck with its hot tub. Very nicely appointed, with a gracious, generous, knowledgeable and enthusiastic hostess. A genuinely full breakfast was provided to our wishes. We cannot wait to return!

Room Tip: There are two rooms--one with king size bed and en suite, the other with a queen size bed, accessing...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cliffhanger. Sue is a superb hostess, and provides a lot of helpful tidbits and advice on what to see and do while in Haines. Breakfasts are superb - both the food, the view and the company. We stayed in the Master King suite and enjoyed the the spaciousness of the room as well as great views over the Chilkat valley into Haines immensely. We also reveled in the broader views one gets from the great room and the balcony. We are on a seven plus week road trip from Texas to Alaska and back, and this B&B was certainly in the top two or three of the 30 lodging establishments we stayed at during our trip. Sue's hospitality and humor only added to the experience.

The drive into the B&B requires a 1.1 mile drive up the side of a mountain on a dirt road, so be prepared and if you are a flatlander such as myself, do take it slow. I believe in winter Sue escorts guests on a snow machine. But however you get to the B&B, I can tell you it is worth it!

Room Tip: If the Master King Suite is available for the nights you wish to stay, book that for the best views.

This B & B is outstanding. We had a very enjoyable stay. Did not want to leave. Sue is a
wonderful host, goes out of her way to make you feel like family. If I ever have another chance to go to Haines I will not stay anywhere else. This place is so much fun. Great views amd great food. Plus Wiley is a lot of fun.

What an incredible experience we had at the Cliffhanger! While we very much enjoyed Haines for a variety of reasons, the Cliffhanger definately made the trip well worth it. We are still dreaming of our time in the hot tub with the mountains all around and bald eagles overhead. Sue was very accomodating and helpful during our stay, even taking us on a drive at night in search of bears and popping us popcorn while we watched White Fang. The house was very nice and well kept, and even came with bathrobes and slippers. Oh, and did I already mention the hot tub?! We spent every morning and night relaxing in it with wine. All in all a wonderful place to stay that I would highly recommend!

We've been going to Haines for many years, living in Whitehorse, Haines is a popular weekend retreat for us. What a nice place Our hostess Sue has up there, literally hanging from the cliff side of the mountain, a very nice and clean modern house, wonderful bed and linen, wrap around deck with a million dollar view, hot tub, and a breakfast to die for. It's close to town, maybe 5 minutes drive. The house is very quiet, and the finishes are impeccable. I can't think of a better place to wake up and have coffee, especially after a long night relaxing in the got tub.

Sue Waterhouse has done an amazing job turning this beautiful home into a really comfortable and welcoming B&B in such a very short time. She met us at the ferry dock and was nice enough to take us on a narrated tour of Haines - it's obvious she's proud of her newly-adopted hometown! After she showed us to our room, we kicked off our shoes and made ourselves at home which wasn't hard with such a welcoming hostess! I had mentioned to Sue that the cost was a little outside the budget I'd set for our two-weeks of traveling in AK, but once I saw the website photos, I couldn't reserve fast enough, and I'm here to tell you, the website photos are right on the money - what a spectacular view! Breakfast was lovely and made to order. I wish we'd been able to stay longer, but I'd return in a heartbeat, if only to kidnap Wiley!
