Not sure I can add much to the other reviewers here. My wife and I stayed 2 notes, 9/20 and 9/22/13. Had a room facing the tram and mountain on the 4th floor. The overall hotel experience was quite enjoyable, the nicest hotel we stayed at in Alaska on a 10 day vacation. This was the dead season at the hotel and the occupancy rate was low; but that made little difference one way or the other, apart from the fact that the better restaurants at the hotel were closed (the 7 Glaciers on the top of the mountain and the sushi restaurant in the hotel). But the dinners were fine in the hotel's general restaurant and the breakfasts were "Starbucks like" in the coffee shop near the hotel exit to get to the tram and served our purposes. The rooms were lovely, and the service excellent. The grounds are beautiful. I suggest taking the tram up to the top for the views -- if you do, be sure to look in the advertising magazines in your room for discount coupons as the tram ride (in the absence of skiing or eating at the restaurant) is pricey but, on balance, worth it. If you are in excellent shape, you can hike up to the top of the mountain and ride down for free, but this option will be gone once the snow starts. It is cold up top so dress accordingly. But the views are fabulous.
The hotel pool and spa are beautiful (though, weirdly, you can only get to them on the third floor, and walk down to the second, with the lockers on the first floor). There is a nice steam room as well (although coed and with kids using it a lot) adjacent to the pool. Be advised that if you like to swim for exercise, locals use the pool for kids swimming lessons are there are times during the day when you will not be able to swim laps for all intents and purposes.
We never left the hotel or its grounds in our two days so never explored Girdwood, but it looked like a cute ski town, albeit small. Hiking the hotel grounds in our fall visit was, however, quite delightful. We also got a lot of great pictures and the natural beauty of the area is stunning. As Girdwood and the hotel are only an hours drive from Anchorage (at least in non-snow conditions), it is well worth your time to schedule a stay here even if not coming for the skiing.
