“Nice Day Trip from Anchorage”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

Contrary to the words of Trip Advisor, Portage Glacier is not in Anchorage. It is actually in Portage close to Girdwood. It is approx 1.5 hours away, depending on traffic and weather. The drive down the Seward highway is quite scenic with a few lookout points on the way for breaks or pictures. the whole trip is definitely worth it from Anchorage and pretty inexpensive for Alaska tourism. It is the closest place to Anchorage to be able to get up close to a glacier.

“Awesome trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

Love the proximity of this glacier to anchorage. The lake is beautiful and the boat ride is short and comfortable. Excellent visitor center..

“Beautiful snow valley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013 via mobile

The Portage glacier valley was absolutely stunning. We were at the Portage lake that was frozen in May and surrounding us were snow covered pure white mountains. Being in such a beautiful place was an amazing experience.
And this beautiful valley is just one hours drive along the scenic Anchorage Whittier highway. A must visit place.
Also nearby is the USA's longest mountain tunnel that leads to Whittier port.

“Disappointing”

Poor scenery. Minimal service. Private vendor to glaciers not terribly interested in anything but fares.

“One of nature's great powers at work.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

The glacier is simply breath-taking in its pure beauty. While it has receded a lot over the years, it's very much still a beautiful place. While you are there, take a drive through the tunnel to Whittier - a quaint little fishing town nearby.
