“Not budget! Paradise Cove, Aitutaki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

We can certainly recommend Paradise Cove on Aitutaki. It is said to be classed as a budget but both the bungalow and the service far exeeds this. Rooms are not large but it is certenly tidy. The balcony also givs a real sense of the waterfront location. You live in a perfect beach where it is depp enough to swim. We have previously stayed at the Pacific Resort and outside our husvar it was to shallow. The staff is also very helpful and pleasant.

Out of the 3 islands I visited, this was the best place I stayed in. My beach hut was very clean, breakfast was delivered to my door in the morning, and it was right on the beach. They picked me up from the airport, took me to the store, dropped me off at a cafe and then came back around to pick me up again. If I'm ever lucky enough to get to travel to the Cook Islands again, I'm going directly to Paradise Cove!

Amazing location right on the beach. Bikes were organized for us. Next door to an inexpensive fish restaurant serving fresh fish. Can swim in the lagoon at any stage of the tide unlike some other locations. Just the perfect place to be! Would highly recommend this accommodation!

I'm glad I booked the last minute trip from Rarotonga to Aitutaki last year as I had enjoyed Aitutaki so much more.

Paradise cove bungalows were very close to the beach and it was a good b&b, value for money compared to the other more expensive options, 2x to 4x the price.

You have the bungalow to yourself, free airport pickup, small kitchen in the bungalow and just being next to the ocean!

Let's see how this year goes...

We were picked up at the small Aitutaki airport by our hosts for the short drive to Paradise Cove (via town to buy supplies), and led to our bungalow overlooking the reef and Pacific ocean. The view from the balcony was wonderful, and there was a small table and chairs to sit outside in the light tropical breeze. The studio room contained bed, a safe and TV (neither of which we used), a small table, and a kitchen area with fridge, stove top, and sink. There is a bathroom with basin, toilet, and shower - good for washing off the salt after frequent dips in the sea. The standard is modest, but sufficient, and for the price very reasonable.

From the bungalows, it's a pleasant walk up the beach ~20 minutes (in sandals or reef shoes, as the small coral pieces can be sharp) to one of the recommended snorkelling areas (off the end of the old airport runway, but with no more than a dozen flights a day, this is not an issue). We also had a good walk around the top of the island and down to beaches on the lagoon side, and accepted a lift from a fellow Kiwi who spotted us making our way back along the road. There are ~1200 people on Aitutaki, and it's a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

We had a couple of small items that needed fixing in our room, but the staff were happy to oblige, and did so promptly when asked. They were also very helpful with information on the area, and on our second day arranged a lagoon cruise, ringing around several companies to find something suitable and organising for us to be picked up. A lagoon cruise is highly recommended for any stay on Aitutaki, and the views of the atoll reef and various islands are stunning.

We were sad to leave, although we had another week on Rarotonga to look forward to with friends. Our hosts drove us out to the airport, made sure we were OK, and then came back at departure time for a final hug - it's that kind of place!

We have just returned from our stay at Paradise Cove on Aitutaki and I feel compelled to write a review straight away by way of returning the real kindnesses we experienced from Junior - the owner of Paradise Cove - and Joe.

We stayed in bungalow 4, where the view is just astonishingly beautiful - imagine a sundeck that looks out over a beautiful beach and transparent sea, fringed by palm trees, like something out of a movie. Just beautiful. Yes, the bungalow sundecks are close together, but this is how we befriended our neighbouring travellers and exchanged tips about where to go next.

We felt very lucky to have crossed paths with Junior, who turned a wonderful holiday into a once-in-a-lifetime experience by taking us out to his deserted island for an overnight stay on Myeena (probably the wrong spelling, but that's how it sounded phonetically!) where we honestly thought we were in paradise, my husband and I cooking freshly-caught fish (which Junior caught and gave to us), swimming in the lagoon and reading on the beach, as the island's only two inhabitants for a glorious 24 hours. Junior even left us with his own personal mobile phone for the duration of our stay on the island so we would not feel isolated if we we were worried about anything - and having a tendancy to worry about things, I really appreciated this gesture.

Paradise Cove offers great value in comparison with the bigger resorts on Aitutaki, and Junior & co are motivated by ensuring that you have an enjoyable holiday rather than gleaning a profit out of you.

The compromise with Paradise Cove is that there is no food offering - though Puffys 4mins walk away is great - and there is a slight feeling of abandonment on a Sunday (the inhabitants of the island are very religious, so you need to get food in advance and plan for Sunday to be a day of quiet relaxation as you won't realistically achieve much that day - but this will be the same wherever you go), and you really need to rent scooters in order to cover the distance to town and to bigger resorts close by for food. On that subject, everything we needed was dealt with very pleasantly and efficiently by Junior and Joe - they arranged for scooters to arrive within a minute or two of us requesting them, booked us on Teking's brilliant lagoon trip, ran us into town several times to eat breakfast and drop us off on our excursions, let us use their internet to book our onwards accommodation and phone for our connecting flight, and all of this while feeding us free passionfruit - they could not have been more accommodating of our needs.

Please go and visit Paradise Cove - you will leave safe in the knowledge that your hard earned money has gone to genuinely good people (something that my husband and I always feel very strongly about), and will have a wonderful stay.

The little "are", beachhouses, built on poles overlook the sea. Together with the huge palm trees they really give you the feeling you have found your island dream. It is a small family business that does not provide any fancy shows, but a nice and friendly atmosphere. There is a small kitchen corner in every house and a bathroom, no air conditioning, but a fan.
