“Be aware before you book of some drawbacks...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Beautiful views and Villas but there are several things to be aware of staying here.. It's located on a very steep hill and not connected to a beach and if you are handicapped and/or use a wheelchair/stroller or have difficulty walking up and down steep walkways) this is not the place for you. You have to call a golf cart to pick you up and take you everywhere. There are kitchens in the Villas but the closest store to the resort has quite a bit of canned foods- very little in the way of fresh foods. Better to stop at a larger store closer to town before you arrive. We were given a 3 bedroom which was nice but the air conditioning doesn't work in the 3rd room and there was no fan. Because of the mosquitoes ( our daughter has at least 30 in one night) you were told to keep all windows and doors closed and you missed out of the nice breeze. The jacuzzi was lukewarm and there is one very small pool located off of the lobby filled with children and about 10 lounge chairs. You have to take a boat shuttle that leaves several times a day to a private island so the flexibility offered at most other resorts on the island is limited. We booked several nights but left after the first night and the front office manager was not to accommodating. And 20 hours of internet and 1 night room service for 1 person was $250 US. The internet is charged by the hour. It's a wonderful place if you are aware of these drawbacks but the mosquitoes alone would make me choose otherwise. We did stay at another resort on the island - not even 10 minutes away and never had one problem with mosquitoes. And, if you are from the US, bring your own a/c plugs as they have 2 available at the front desk and you wait your turn.

Dear jenny1023, Ia Orana,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your comments with other travelers. It is absolutely true that our property which is located on a steep hill-side, is not the most easy for our guests having walking challenges, yet as you mentioned our staff is on call to drive you anywhere on property. Our (natural) private snorkeling beach that is located on an islet in a Protected Marine Preserve, is reachable via a boat shuttle so you must take into account that you'll need to transfer from the A/C vehicle to the boat and then down the boat to the beach. This is undoubtedly the best snorkeling you can find on the island which makes it different from other properties. Island groceries are small and do not offer much of fresh food indeed, there are only a couple of larger stores on the island one of them being located right by the ferry port where it is recommended to stop for those of our guests looking at cooking while staying with us. Our 3-bdr villas do only have 2 (double) bedrooms air-conditionned, the 3rd bedroom being most often used as day beds for afternoon nap, since looking at the ocean and/or beautiful valley, depending on what view you have booked. At this time of the year when it is the summer (humid) season in French Polynesia (Dec-Feb) it is most likely that there will be mosquitoes at night which is why we do recommend to our guests to close the doors, windows and blinds in the bedroom(s) when using the mosquito plugs that we have available for our guests, for greater effectiveness. This certainly does not mean that it must be kept closed at all times, but is our recommendation for a better sleep at night. It stopped raining on the day you left, which certainly explains why you did not have further problems with mosquitoes. The 250$ you were (late) charged for, as you left the property without settling down your incidentals and accommodation, includes your Internet and meal delivered to your villa indeed, but also the lunch that your family of 3 adults had upon arrival at the hotel (starter + main + beverages), phone calls and city tax. The Internet is not exactly charged per the hour as you suggest, as you can log in and out as many times as you want, and also use this provider's ticket everywhere else in the destination (airports, outer islands...). Lastly, we have been purchasing additional converters for our American guests on the day you were here with us, since 3 of ours burned out in just one afternoon after guests used them for devices requiring more than 85 Watts (hair dryer, curling iron...) while they were explained not to. The voltage converters are lent free of charge, so that our valued guests can conveniently use their electronic devices while staying with us (cell phones, tablets, laptops..) and it is very unfortunate that some users do not pay attention. The one that was lent to you by the way was no longer working after you left. Once again, we thank you for your feedback and wish you the best for the New Year.
Sincerely,
Nelly

“Beautiful views, not on the beach and lots of bugs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

We went here on our honeymoon. The villas are beautiful but as others have stated they got it wrong with the air conditioning. They only have air in the bedrooms and sometimes its hot in the other rooms. Also, if you leave your doors open for some fresh air you will have a lot of critters in your room. The hot tubs are not heated, so very disappointed about that. The pool is beautiful and they take you to a private island which was lovely. The food is VERY expensive. Coming from NYC nothing shocks me...but this was pricey. The staff was wonderful and all in all an amazing trip!

Room Tip: Try to get a room close to the reception or else you have to walk A LOT!

“Absolutely worth the views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

We stayed here for 5 of our 10 night honeymoon in Tahiti. Under the recommendation of Gene Sweeney at Fly Tahiti we wanted to experience the views Tahiti has to offer as well as the overwater bungalow experience so we opted to stay at Legends for the incredible views and were not disappointed. Gene managed to get us an upgrade to an ocean-view villa. The staff are very friendly and were willing to drive us around in the golf cart if we needed. They booked us a car for a day so we could drive around the island. We also stocked up on groceries. We are a couple that love to cook and this hotel is PERFECT for that. The kitchen is well equipped (there is even a dishwasher! Although the knives could be sharpened a bit!) and we enjoyed eating on our own schedule without being held to restaurant hours. The private beach was a 5 min van ride and then a 10 minute boat ride and definitely worth it. The snorkling off the beach was great and it is where a lot of the snorkling tours bring their paying guests... but you don't have to pay extra! We recommend bringing a collapsible cooler with you since there is no food available on the island but the boat goes back and forth quite frequently. The captain of the boat was very friendly. On our last day driving out to the beach at 9:00am we saw lots of dolphins. Our captain turned the boat around and let us drift among the dolphins before continuing to the island. The beds could be a little softer and on our last couple nights a really noisy family moved in next door with three young and very loud kids. Unfortunately the parents were not very good at controlling them which was disappointing but not the hotels fault. Also would recommend bug spray, it is a tropical island and you are up in the forest but we did not find it bad. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in Villa 16 which was close enough to the reception for an easy walk but not right next do...

“Pretty, Private & Relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

My husband and I stayed here for the first four nights of our honeymoon (followed by several nights at the Hilton Bora Bora, which I'll review next). There isn't a lot to do on Moorea or at this resort, but it's a nice place to hole up and unwind in private for a few days. Legends is a good choice if you're up for something different and you'll be visiting other islands (and getting your beach front or overwater bungalow experience there).

The villas here are nice and the views are beautiful. We had a 2 bedroom premium ocean view villa, which we loved, but some of the mountain view villas at the back of the property are apparently less expensive and looked just as (if not more) amazing. The best part about this resort is the fact that each villa is a little self contained home with a washer/dryer, AC in the bedrooms and full kitchen. You can eat healthier and cut some costs by cooking your own meals. We loved it.

We flew into Tahiti, took a cab from the airport to the ferry and then took the ferry to Moorea. There are Avis car rental locations all over the island--at the airport, at the ferry station and right down the hill from Legends. You can easily rent a car at one location and return to any of the others. Car rentals near $100 a day and no advance reservation is required. We highly recommend renting a car--at least for your first day--in order to make a grocery run for your booze, bottled water and food. While there are a few SMALL markets within walking distance of Legends, these are very basic and extremely limited in their selections and you'll be happier going to the big "Champion" grocery store near the ferry for better savings and choices.

This is more of a condo resort than a hotel, which is what we wanted, but if you're not prepared for it or if you come here without a car or groceries, I could see how you could feel a little stranded. There is a restaurant on the premises that's supposed to be good but we didn't check it out because we cooked our own meals each day. The "take away" food from the little snack shop on the grounds was good. We had a couples massage at the "spa," which was excellent. The villas have DVD players and the front desk has a decent selection of DVDs that you can borrow during your stay. The pool isn't large and it's more or less one and the same with the lobby and cafe and reception. It's beautiful but not the most inviting pool scene for actual swimming or laying out as a result.

As for the complaints about the steep hills and walking, this is a mountain resort. If you have a car, you'll be able to park right outside your villa. If you're without a car, they'll take you wherever you want to go at the resort via golf cart--just be patient. The resort has a stretch of a nearby private island when you're ready for some beach time...it has a small lagoon feel to it....it takes 15 min to get there between the van ride down the hill and the boat ride to the island, all of which depart at regular intervals each day. It was a smaller stretch of beach than I'd imagined but still very beautiful. There are a few picnic tables there so consider bringing lunch or a few drinks with you when you go.

I would agree with the reviews about the wildlife in your villa. We were prepared for it after some of the other reviews (i.e., the lack of screens, etc.) --and it is an island mountain resort so I suppose it comes with the turf--but every night there were geckos and during the day the occasional bug or bird visiting.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend Legends to others. It definitely seemed like the nicest resort on the island.

“If not for the beds, it would have gotten 5 stars”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Upon arriving, we were struck by the beauty of the grounds. You are surrounded by lush green trees everywhere you look with an expansive view of the ocean and lagoon from the lobby. Upon arriving, we were informed that we were upgraded from a 2 bedroom to a 3 bedroom villa, which was a pleasant surprise. We stayed in Villa 39 at the top of the hill and loved our view from the kitchen and balcony, but were surprised that the only bedroom with the view was the one with two single beds, which did not make sense. Why would you give the children's room the ocean view?

The three downsides to this hotel were:

1) The beds. They were awful. There is no getting around it. They were not comfortable at all.
2) The master bedroom did not have an ocean view.
3) There was not daily maid service.

The other thing to prepare for is the mosquitos. There are lots of them, so keep the doors and windows closed

The three best parts of the hotel were:

1) The views
2) The private beach with boat service. Watch out for the Picasso fish, they will attack!
3) Their recommendation of Albert's Jet Ski tour. That was the highlight of our trip. We jet-skied with dolphins, saw a whale breech in front of us, swam with sharks and pet sting rays.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel, but would warn you about the beds.

Also, the restaurant on the property was not terribly impressive, though the food all over the island was not that great in general.

Dear JenHillJHCCS, Ia Orana,
Thank you very much for taking the time to review our property. The architect of Legends Resort indeed has allowed the rooms where you would spend the most time in to enjoy the expansive view over the lagoon & ocean, that is from the spacious living room, the kitchen, the extension of the living room with the day beds (children's room) & the outside deck. Our eco-friendly housekeeping plan includes a maid service of the villa every 3 days indeed, to help us control the amount of detergent products introduced into our fragile environment however, you can of course choose to have (optional) housekeeping services daily. Thank you once again for staying with us & we look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Sunny regards from Moorea,
Nelly
