“Pretty, Private & Relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

My husband and I stayed here for the first four nights of our honeymoon (followed by several nights at the Hilton Bora Bora, which I'll review next). There isn't a lot to do on Moorea or at this resort, but it's a nice place to hole up and unwind in private for a few days. Legends is a good choice if you're up for something different and you'll be visiting other islands (and getting your beach front or overwater bungalow experience there).

The villas here are nice and the views are beautiful. We had a 2 bedroom premium ocean view villa, which we loved, but some of the mountain view villas at the back of the property are apparently less expensive and looked just as (if not more) amazing. The best part about this resort is the fact that each villa is a little self contained home with a washer/dryer, AC in the bedrooms and full kitchen. You can eat healthier and cut some costs by cooking your own meals. We loved it.

We flew into Tahiti, took a cab from the airport to the ferry and then took the ferry to Moorea. There are Avis car rental locations all over the island--at the airport, at the ferry station and right down the hill from Legends. You can easily rent a car at one location and return to any of the others. Car rentals near $100 a day and no advance reservation is required. We highly recommend renting a car--at least for your first day--in order to make a grocery run for your booze, bottled water and food. While there are a few SMALL markets within walking distance of Legends, these are very basic and extremely limited in their selections and you'll be happier going to the big "Champion" grocery store near the ferry for better savings and choices.

This is more of a condo resort than a hotel, which is what we wanted, but if you're not prepared for it or if you come here without a car or groceries, I could see how you could feel a little stranded. There is a restaurant on the premises that's supposed to be good but we didn't check it out because we cooked our own meals each day. The "take away" food from the little snack shop on the grounds was good. We had a couples massage at the "spa," which was excellent. The villas have DVD players and the front desk has a decent selection of DVDs that you can borrow during your stay. The pool isn't large and it's more or less one and the same with the lobby and cafe and reception. It's beautiful but not the most inviting pool scene for actual swimming or laying out as a result.

As for the complaints about the steep hills and walking, this is a mountain resort. If you have a car, you'll be able to park right outside your villa. If you're without a car, they'll take you wherever you want to go at the resort via golf cart--just be patient. The resort has a stretch of a nearby private island when you're ready for some beach time...it has a small lagoon feel to it....it takes 15 min to get there between the van ride down the hill and the boat ride to the island, all of which depart at regular intervals each day. It was a smaller stretch of beach than I'd imagined but still very beautiful. There are a few picnic tables there so consider bringing lunch or a few drinks with you when you go.

I would agree with the reviews about the wildlife in your villa. We were prepared for it after some of the other reviews (i.e., the lack of screens, etc.) --and it is an island mountain resort so I suppose it comes with the turf--but every night there were geckos and during the day the occasional bug or bird visiting.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend Legends to others. It definitely seemed like the nicest resort on the island.

“If not for the beds, it would have gotten 5 stars”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Upon arriving, we were struck by the beauty of the grounds. You are surrounded by lush green trees everywhere you look with an expansive view of the ocean and lagoon from the lobby. Upon arriving, we were informed that we were upgraded from a 2 bedroom to a 3 bedroom villa, which was a pleasant surprise. We stayed in Villa 39 at the top of the hill and loved our view from the kitchen and balcony, but were surprised that the only bedroom with the view was the one with two single beds, which did not make sense. Why would you give the children's room the ocean view?

The three downsides to this hotel were:

1) The beds. They were awful. There is no getting around it. They were not comfortable at all.
2) The master bedroom did not have an ocean view.
3) There was not daily maid service.

The other thing to prepare for is the mosquitos. There are lots of them, so keep the doors and windows closed

The three best parts of the hotel were:

1) The views
2) The private beach with boat service. Watch out for the Picasso fish, they will attack!
3) Their recommendation of Albert's Jet Ski tour. That was the highlight of our trip. We jet-skied with dolphins, saw a whale breech in front of us, swam with sharks and pet sting rays.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel, but would warn you about the beds.

Also, the restaurant on the property was not terribly impressive, though the food all over the island was not that great in general.

Dear JenHillJHCCS, Ia Orana,
Thank you very much for taking the time to review our property. The architect of Legends Resort indeed has allowed the rooms where you would spend the most time in to enjoy the expansive view over the lagoon & ocean, that is from the spacious living room, the kitchen, the extension of the living room with the day beds (children's room) & the outside deck. Our eco-friendly housekeeping plan includes a maid service of the villa every 3 days indeed, to help us control the amount of detergent products introduced into our fragile environment however, you can of course choose to have (optional) housekeeping services daily. Thank you once again for staying with us & we look forward to welcoming you again soon!
Sunny regards from Moorea,
Nelly

“Piece of Heaven in Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

Stayed Oct 26- Nov 3 at this gorgeous resort. I will warn now- this resort may not be for everyone. It is situated on the mountain so you either require strong lungs and legs or the use of the golf cart shuttles provided easily. That said- the individual bungalows are well worth the climb. We were advised at check-in that "regretfully", we had a mountain view, as opposed to an ocean view- No regrets required- the view was spectacular (Villa 44). It was so quiet, with the exception of the roosters others have mentioned- but honestly, I adjusted quite quickly to the sounds. Any concerns or requests we had were answered and dealt with quickly, efficiently and always with smiles. My french is terrible- but they work very hard to speak english and communication was never a problem. Groceries have been mentioned in other postings, but for walkers, I will say that 30minutes in either direction are much larger, better stocked grocery stores with a far better selection of goods. Wait to buy your fruit from the roadside stands- its cheaper and much fresher. We also were pleased to discover the lovely restaraunt on-site (La Sens) as well as great "take-out" meals from the Lagoon Cafe in the lobby (you've got to try the curry chicken!). We also walked across to the Inter-Continental hotel and out outside in their poolside restaraunt and took advantage of the free shuttle offered by Les Tapenier (see review). We didn't do any tours while here as we were thrilled to just relax for a week- but the free boat ride to the island for lazing on the beach or free snorkelling is a must. If not for the 18 hour flight from Canada- I would go back in a second!

“Little Island Paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We stayed at Legends back in May (2012) for 5 nights.

The moment i found Legends resort on Expedia i new it would be something spectacular,
& I wasn't disappointed.

A few days before the trip i emailed Legends and booked a pick up from the ferry in Moorea as it is a good half hour maybe even 45 mins from the ferry dock in moorea. I would suggest you do this as it saves a good amount of time lugging your bag around searching for a taxi.

Upon arrival the first thing that hits you in the lobby is the Amazing view.. it really is jaw dropping. So after a arrival drink & a floral lei we were taken to our villa.

The villas are set in the hills, nestled away with there own driveways and private patio complete with gazebo & cold water spa. You can think of the villa as a fully functional home away from home, full cutlery, dishwasher, clothes line & best of all PRIVATE.

For excursions we did the quad bike & Jetski tours which we loved. We also travelled to the Private Motu Legends have whenever we could- It was a unpopulated, lay back & relax kind of beach.. Just perfect!

Of course no hotel is perfect, The beds are a bit firmer then i like & the chairs in the lounge are stiff, If you dont have a rental car then unfortunately you will have a bit of a hike to get anywhere & the walk up the hill is a killer especially in the Hot Sun. but to be honest thats what i love about holidays.. you have fun & not so fun experiences and laugh about it later.

I fell in love with the Island of Moorea & i think its because of this Hotel! We will be back in 2013!

“Worth going back to”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

This review is slightly overdue. My husband and I visited The Legends Resort on August 5th for our Honeymoon; we stayed for five days, and it was incredible. At first we were little sad because of a room upgraded that was added to our bill, and one, might I add, that we couldn't get out of, but when we saw the room that they had placed us that quickly diminished our sadness. We woke up every morning with a beautiful view of the sunrise and went to sleep watching the sunset. It was amazing. As far as the resort goes, the property is very well kept for the most part. We wished that the jacuzzi emitted hot water instead of cold water. Yes, we understand that it gets hot outside, thus the cool water, but for a romantic moment warm water jacuzzi in the night would have been great. Then, there were too many geckos and night bugs in the night. Another issue we had was with the onsite restaurant, the food was horrible. We wanted to give it another try, but frankly, we were too scared. Now, the good things. The house comes equipped with a full kitchen, which was nice. A nice flat screen tv. All of the amenities that made you feel as though you were indeed living on this incredible island. The staff was VERY kind. They helped us with everything including but not limited to getting transportation, situating us in our rooms and teaching my amazing husband some of their language. It was great just to continuously have someone greeting you with a smile. We will definitely go back as they made our entire trip worth it. "Moruru!"

P.S. The Intercontinental is within walking distance, so if you want to visit their hotel it is possible. However, I found their staff to be less friendly than the staff in Bora Bora. And, while over there, on Moorea, please rent a bike and see the island for yourselves. Do the "dirt bike tour guide" and go to the theater. As far as food, I thought Bora Bora was way more delightful. However, try Snack Mahana the food is exquisite. They are only open for lunch.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for Villa 16 or a villa with a view of the ocean. Trust me!
