“Wonderful Atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

Pension te Miti is a great place to stay while in Tahiti. The location is beautiful, near both mountains and the ocean (Sapinus & Paea for surfing), and, contrary to many places in Tahiti, only a short walk to food (including roulottes, a supermarket, & a 24hr. gas station). While staying there, I enjoyed a delicious meal with a paraglider from the Marquises. He was very kind and did not accept my offer to pay money. These are the sort of people that you will find at Pension te Miti - down to earth, friendly people. Christelle was very accommodating and was anxious to help in any way she could. For the price, it is almost impossible to find somewhere to stay that is better. You will feel more than comfortable staying at Pension te Miti.

Room Tip: Private rooms may result in less disturbance during the night (as expected in dorm style hostels)

We got in on a late flight and needed an affordable place to sleep for the night not too far from the airport. The room was basic and clean and the staff was very helpful and guided us with things to do on the island. A light breakfast was included in the cost which was nice and there is a beach 10 minutes walking distance from the pension.

We stayed 2 nights at the pension and were welcome by Fred and Christelle who are very friendly and professional hosts. They will happily share good local information since they've been living in Tahiti for quite a while now. We stayed in the second house (they own two houses next to each other). Our room was basic but clean and tidy, the house has a large shared kitchen and nice outdoor area. It is conveniently located few hundred meters from the nice sandy beach with good snorkelling at PK18. Great breakfast too. Overall good experience, handy to the beach however you'll need wheels to go to downtown Tahiti.

Room Tip: The second house seems a bit more quiet since it is smaller.

It was great staying with Fred and Christelle and the boys for 3 nights. Fred can speak English very well and was a really great person talking to at breakfast. When we wanted to go to a Tahitian show at the Le Meridien Hotel, he offered to take us there for free, which was great. Also, because we were the only guests, apart from another couple, he let us stay in a double room for the same price as our pre-booked dorm!
10 minutes walk to grocery store, but very far from Papeete (in our opinion, Papeete is a pain in the neck, anyway).
Downside: A bit of walking to beach, but once you are there the lagoons will blow you away! Best snorkel experience for uns in FP (been to Moorea, Bora and Tahiti). Lots of dogs nearby, too and roosters, but thats just FP.

Pension Te Miti, Tahiti
Let’s start with the good stuff. Fred and Christelle are great hosts. Fred happily arranged for several transfers and excursions and Christelle gave us solid advice for getting things done in town. The facility is certainly clean; the breakfasts are good. It might better be described as a hostel as up to 12 guests can share a bathroom and the kitchen is communal as well. It could use some updating. None of this is problematic for the backpacking crowd or anyone willing to share space. The only thing we found challenging was beach access and getting to services. The closest beach is, as advertised, only 200m down the main ring road, but the facilities are under renovation and there are currently no bathrooms or showers. The beach is also eroded quite badly and not overly appealing as a result. The “real” beach lies somewhat less than 1km from Te Miti, but the road is very congested with little space for pedestrians. Walking can be a bit unnerving with smaller children, though I doubt twenty-somethings would give it a second thought. The snorkeling is good; bus service into town is erratic.

Maybe the bigger issue is why anyone would visit the island of Tahiti in the first place. The beaches are not very good, Papeete is very congested and it is horribly expensive at best. Certainly honeymooners will want to spend some time in those silly over the water huts, but beyond that I can’t think of a reason to recommend it. There are many other places to stay in the South Pacific that have better beaches with excellent snorkeling and are much less crowded, expensive and out of the way (Tonga, Fiji). Tahiti is a good transit point to the other islands (see Fare Maeva review for Mo’orea), and if that’s the case, then Pension Te Miti would certainly be a good choice for a budget accommodation, with the points noted above.

Room Tip: The dorms are a bit limited on space, if you can get one of the rooms, you'll likely be happier.

Excellent service, very welcoming. Good, clean rooms and great hosts who were full of good local information and knowledge. It was the perfect place to spend the first couple of days in French Polynesia, allowing us to get our bearings. There was a nearby beach with pretty good snorkeling and a couple of grocery stores within easy walking distance. These guys charge 500 CFP for 30 minutes of Internet, so that was not the best.

Went on a diving trip to french Polynesia, and while on the island of tahiti we stayed at pension Te Miti ( the sea in english i believe ) We chose it because it is away from busy Papeete and it's close to where the white sand beaches are located
Airport pick up on time, Fred the owner was never short of a good advice on what to do and see, he arranged on advance a car rental for us, they have the cheapest rental of the island nearby, so it was spot on
The place is off the main road, mountain view, nice tropical garden, clean facilities, big breakfast in the morning
Thanks to fred and chris, they do a great job ! no wonder i met so many repeaters ^^
