“beautiful place at a great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

we stayed here for 3 nights before our 5 nights in moorea and really enjoyed it. It is clean and simple, best part was the wonderful, kind, and helpful host, and location in a small nature park with waterfalls. very peaceful and relaxing. tahiti iti is also a much more relaxed and less touristy part of the island. I think there are only 4 bungalows, and 3 have kitchens, which is really nice when traveling. Shower could have been a little hotter but I think that is just tahiti for ya...was the same in moorea too

Room Tip: try to get a room with a kitchen attached

So many positive things can be said about this little piece heaven. First the Family is incredible! The bungalows are secluded and romantic. The food is local, fresh and good. Overall they try really hard to accommodate every request!! I would totally go back once I have knocked a few other destinations off my list, and that's saying a lot!!

Now for the surf, the owner surfs and will be more than happy to indulge you! We traveled to the surf in the pension's boat and surfed a number of local breaks including Teahupoo. My favorite, by far, was Big Pass, it is every bit as heavy as Teahupoo, throws out something fierce and allows for some fun high performance surfing! This was a trip of a lifetime and I am glad I had the experience of staying at Pension Chayan.

Room Tip: There are only four bungalows so every room is amazing, there are freshwater eels in the stream comi...

We stayed at this pension (small hotel or B&B) for 3 days in May, 2006. It was the low season and the place was not well publicized (we saw it as we drove by and decided to check it out). There are four bungalows but we were the only guests at the time.

It was both an excellent value and setting compared to other places we had stayed nearer Papeete. There was another pension just south of Pension Chayan that looked very good too, but it was being remodeled at the time. If you’ve rented a car, I think you should check out the pensions and fares (rooms for rent) down south in this area, the west coast of Tahiti Iti. However, Pension Chayan may actually be the best in the area anyway.

This is a B&B owned by a Tahitian couple, Yanni and Chantal Salmon. They live across the street (the small costal road) from the pension. They speak English and French well. You can see some pictures at their site by searching for “Pension Chayan”. They describe it as located in a park, which is actually part of their land, and it’s both beautiful and very private. There are small waterfalls up to about 20 feet high. These come from the mountains to the east and keep the place air-conditioned; they also produce great acoustic ambience. The four bungalows are scattered among some brilliant landscaping: walking-bridges over little brooks, lots of high trees for full-sky canopy, flowers, etc. There is no sound from anything outside the park.

This place is south of the small town of Matiti. To see it on Google Earth, search for Matiti (it’s not necessary to type “Tahiti”). Pension Chayan is about 1.25 miles south along the coast, and it’s exactly halfway between Matiti and the next town south (Teahupoo). Look for the two relatively large piers there that terminate in a larger square; the north one belongs to Pension Chayan. You can lounge there (the white circle is an umbrella and beach chair), and you can borrow any of their various kayaks. The water is very calm there, but just south is a surfing area. The Pension itself is just east of the pier, across the street. It’s about 66 km (41 miles) south of the airport.

Tahiti Iti is the only easy-to-get-to part of French Polynesia with very low light pollution, and the southern night skies have a lot more interesting things to look at than northern skies do. The center of our galaxy is only visible from southern areas. The Magellanic Clouds, the Southern Cross (with the dark Coalsack Nebula across part of it) and Omega Centauri, the most spectacular star cluster, are clearly visible from here with the naked eye (although I brought an 8” telescope--didn’t want to miss the opportunity).

The bungalows were about $160 USD a night. I think it’s about $185 USD a night now. They are each surrounded by greenery and the color theme inside is very white. The waterfalls can be heard from inside if the windows are open, and are quite relaxing. At the time there were no air conditioners, but they weren’t needed. Temperature inside stayed around 75 F (24 C). We had our bungalow configured with two bedrooms. Normally there’s a bedroom, bathroom and living room. Everything worked well. Breakfast is included, and it was a lot of fun to talk to the owners (the Salmons), who were always available. There are small stores and places to eat at the nearby small towns, and we also had some other meals with the Salmons. This is not a place for nightlife. It’s strictly a "natural high".

  • Liked — Atmosphere
  • Disliked — It's far away from major restaurants, etc.
