“Loved my stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

This is a historic Lodge located in a remote, fly in area of Alaska. Given that fact this Lodge is a delightful place to kick back and relax or utilize as a starting point for a remote Alaska adventure. Yes the bath is down the hall - no big deal. A bathroom with running water in bush Alaska is something to be grateful for. Lunch and dinner were excellent, but once again it's bush Alaska so don't be surprised by the prices. My burger was $15 & chicken dinner $25. The staff were friendly, bed was comfy and the setting beautiful. What more could I ask for?? A few less mosquitoes (don't forget your bug dope)

I was only one of 3 guests at the Bettles Lodge this weekend; most of the staff were gone to a wedding, and the operation was being run by a skeleton crew. Still, excellent service from Justin, Anna, George and a few others resulted in maximum enjoyment. The package deal included a comfortable room (with jacuzzi) and all amenities; a restaurant serving very good food, a boat tour to Old Bettles and a village tour. There's also a National Park Visitor Center. There's not a lot to see in Bettles, but we were kept busy. It's a stopping off point for campers going to Gates of the Arctic NP. They also offer flight-seeing tours, but I got a much better price next door at Brooks Air for a flight over the Arrigetch Peaks.

The water has a slight orange tint, and is OK to drink, but complimentary bottled water is provided with each room. I stayed in the Aurora Lodge building, which has a common room with TV and lots of videos & DVDs. There's also free use of a computer in the Lodge lobby.

I enjoyed my stay very much, and the staff should be commended for providing us with a hassle free, memorable experience.

Room Tip: Go for the jacuzzi room; the others have to share a bathroom/shower.

We spent two nights in Bettles as part of a northern lights tour. The flights from/to Fairbanks were smooth, and the views were terrific. After we deplaned, we walked a short distance to the Bettles Aurora Lodge, which was small but warm and very friendly. There are only a few guest rooms, and we had gotten one of the few with a bathroom in the room. Hazel took us on a van tour of Bettles and Evansville (about 30 people), which also included Dexter the dog. That night we went to a small cabin in an attempt to see the northern lights but it was too cloudy. The next day we went to the visitor's center to learn about the national parks in northern Alaska. That evening we took a two-hour dog sled ride with Sven, and that was a terrific experience. We got to meet the dogs and then took a trip over snow, across the frozen river, and through the woods. We even got an opportunity to stand on the sled and "help" Sven mush. The northern lights barely came out that night, again because of the clouds. All meals were at the lodge and were very good, and coffee, tea, and hot chocolate was always available. All the staff were friendly and helpful. In addition, there was a nice array of Alaskan souveniers (with prices better than what we had seen in Anchorage and Fairbanks). We were disappointed in the lack of northern lights but knew that nothing is guaranteed. However, we loved the experience, particularly the dog sledding, and would recommend it.

We stayed at Bettles for four nights in January. Our original plans had only included 3 nights at Bettles but we loved it so much we stayed an extra night. We went to try to see the Northern lights and despite the (almost) full moon we were humbled to see the most amazing display every night we were there.
Bettles lodge is not the Ritz ... it is not even a Hilton ... but it is a wonderful, down-to-earth, friendly, warm and welcoming sanctuary in the most beautiful area of the United States. Our family and friends back home in Australia thought we were completely mad to be making the huge trek to a relatively basic lodge way above the Arctic Circle in the middle of Winter. Possibly they were right .... but we fell completely in love with Bettles and Arctic Alaska.
Having said all that ..... the rooms were warm, comfortable and the beds made sleep easy. We did not have an ensuite room, but the bathrooms were close by ... all were clean and equipped with plenty of hot water, hairdryers and all the creature comforts. The comfy lounge area was welcome each evening as we waited for the "Lights" to appear, and the hot drinks and snacks left out for us each night were fantastic as we came back inside to warm up.
The meals were excellent and certainly plentiful .... Thanks Roger! The management were helpful in every way and treated us as friends rather than just sources of income. Nothing was too much trouble .... Thanks so very much Hazel, Keith and Anna! We feel like you are family.
Despite daily temperatures between -20 and -45 we managed to try snow-shoeing, visit the locals and take some fantastic sightseeing adventures. DO NOT miss a dog sled ride with Sven ... No, it is NOT cheap, but this is Arctic Alaska in Winter after all, and absolutely everything has to be sledded or flown in so you cannot compare the costs with those in the lower states. Thanks so much Sven ... and please give Lollipop and Diaz big hugs from us!
To sum up ...... don't be put off by the distance from Fairbanks ... Bettles Lodge is worth the effort. You will arrive with a few fears and uncertainties and leave feeling like you have had the adventure of a lifetime and created a new family at the same time.

Fantastic place to experience the artic. Sven who did dogsled rides was excellent. They are expensive for two people but it is worth it. Staff can be a little funny to get straight answers in what is happening and one is a little intimidating. Definitely would go back. It's like a little lodge that you meet other beauty lovers. Met some amazing people and all local people /staff are friendly. Try and get an early flight in and a late flight out if you are able to choose.

Room Tip: Try to get room 17 just seems to be set out better.

i went to bettles lodge with a good friend, with our main hope being to see the northern lights. we saw them for two of three nights. words can't describe them, so i won't try! however, even without the lights, it would've been fantastic trip. hazel, anna and the staff are awesome and took such good care of us. it is like being at camp -- you have your respective activities during the day (snowshoeing, dog sledding, etc) and come back for meals together w/ other lodge guests. at night, you may have a campfire or stay out to the view the lights. there is a shared camaraderie in being so isolated and disconnected, whether you want it or not! the rooms are basic, but cozy and warm (thankfully, since it got down to -27F while we were there) more than adequate. the meals are hearty and warming. i hope to return one day!

The flight up to Bettles was great, good views. We were met by the local dog Dexter and of course the staff of the lodge. Thanks to Hazel and Anna for your hospitality, better not forget the cook. The meals were great, no menu to choose from but that was part of the surprise.
The lodge was very warm and cosy, we also borrowed warmer coats, as it was cold out side.
The tour of the village was entertaining, as we were about to leave in the van in hopped 4dogs who came for a ride. Dogs are important to this village. The dog sledging experience was fantastic you must do this. also we went for a walk on the frozen lake with snow shoes.
But the best part was seeing the aurora, this filled the whole sky. We stayed 3 nights for the price of 2 a good deal. So don,t hesitate to go up to this lodge in January.
