“Lots of action right off the dock”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

They had excellent snorkeling only about 25 feet from the shore line. The meals were at set times and unless you had an allergy or something you didn't like then you ate good meals that were quite filling. You can read a book or snorkel. To get to Dangriga cost about $4o belize. It is well worth it. I would recommend staying at least 2 nights. It is a very small island with not much to do other than read and snorkel. Very relaxing.

We stayed at Tobacco Caye Lodge for three nights recently and had an amazing time. We had the place to ourselves due to the season and on the whole the island was quite quiet. We arrived earlier than expected from Dangriga, the people there were really friendly and helpful and our cabin was ready in 20 minutes.
The cabins are clean, basic, but comfortable. The island has a generator which is off during the day so you have to be patient with toilet flushing and the lack of power supply at times. We had a hammock on our veranda and not many people walk past the cabins due to their position on the island so you really feel like you have some privacy. You get a good deal for the price especially in Belize.
Carly cooked us three meals a day which were all huge and there is a cool little bar nearby to get a few drinks from. While we were there a couple of boat parties arrived and camped for the night, but they didn't disturb us at all.
We snorkelled around the island and saw lots of colourful fish and some manta rays. Some of the rays are huge which can be scary, but very cool when they are swimming towards you! We also watched them one night from one of the piers whilst a thunderstorm lit up a cloud in the distance, a special moment.
Overall I would definitely recommend staying here. It's the perfect get away destination and a mini slice of paradise.

As described in the other reviews, this place, and the whole caye, is not upscale or fancy. Great place to relax, snorkel, enjoy the sea. I fished a lot, and really enjoyed doing it, but wouldn't describe it as a fishing destination.

Most impressive aspect of the trip was the Belizeans i met. Nelson, a guy operating a (unofficial) taxi out of the little airport in Dangriga was a great guy. I got in late and had to spend the night in Dangriga. He showed me around, helped me get some supplies. I tipped him for it, of course - the guy is making a living. But there was no pressuring, no attempts to overcharge. A good guy.

Captain A.C. was a good guy as well. I went on a couple excursions with him and they were good. Best part of the trip was fishing with some of the locals. Really friendly, shared their bait with me, gave me tips on fishing. I'll bring extra tackle if i go again. The stuff that's dirt cheap for most of us is pretty costly out there.

Tobacco Caye is a tiny island approx 40 minutes from Dangriga Belize. The 4.5 acre island hosts your stay with many activities. Scuba Diving is amazing, also snorkeling. The protected reef along the barrier wall has endless underwater opportunities. The reef is a hot spot for puffer fish, baricuda, blue spotted rays, eagle rays, and more. Night life is good, beach side bar with dancing. Food is alright at the local restaurant if you like seafood. Overall great experience and amazing sunsets and sun rises.

Room Tip: Rooms behind the restaurant are the best, and offer the greatest beach experience (Lodges are painte...

Tobacco caye is small with almost all the sand taken up by small establishments and local house. The lodge is like an old fishing establishment, very rustic, cold showers, hammocks on porch, bare lightbulbs good view and shaded. Food was okay.

If I was to go again I probably would book with TOBACCO CAYE PARADISE LODGE as the food was better and a peek at the rooms they were much more quaint and maintained with bedding that did not look used up and cleaner. I considered moving but we were only there for 3 days and my husband did not want to.

Room Tip: good breeze in all rooms

If you can get past the fairly gross bathrooms and you can be happy with very minimal amenities, Tobacco Caye Lodge is great place to lay your head. The beach bar is also run by the TCL management. We were told that the previous management kept it cleaner, which would not be hard to do. Still, the food was tasty (if unimaginative) and the beach was heaven! We saw several devil rays wing by the dock, and the snorkeling off the reef was also stunning! Take plenty of cash - the phone lines are not reliable and, therefore, the credit card machines aren't either! Islanders are very kind and friendly.

Room Tip: The cabanas were all about the same. I might try to get into the Paradise Lodge next time, because t...

The rating of 5 stars is for the island itself and natural surroundings. Some of the best snorkeling in the world no doubt. Seriously it's incredible. Huge rays dwarfing you swimming right by you off shore. It truly is magical. The stars at night are just unbelievable. You may think you've seen great stars in your life. Nothing will compare to this. Your eyes nearly pop out of your head. This is in addition to the glow worms just offshore in the water which are beautiful. If you are expecting the lodge to be anything slightly above glorified camping then you should have read this review because it's not. You're are better off going to South Water Caye if you're ok with spending 2-3 times as much on lodging. This is what we will probably do next time because we are getting past the cheap travel age somewhat. George is also fun, tell him to take you Lobster hunting. For $10 he'll take you out in the canoe. Also another guy which I can't remember his name will take you out to the secret garden which is superb snorkeling as well. Things we saw snorkeling were Octopus, Sharks, Rays, Tons of Fish, and Tons of Starfish just swimming off the dock. Reef not as amazing as saw Tioman Island in Malaysia but better marine life.
